⁴ Abide in me, and I [will abide] in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abide in the vine; so neither can you unless you continue in me.

⁵ Who is this coming up cloathed in white leaning on her beloved? Under a citron tree I awaked thee. It was there thy mother bare thee. There she who brought thee forth suffered the pangs of childbirth.

¹⁰ The folded flock shall be disconsolate, like a flock which hath been forsaken; and for a long time the country shall be for a pasture, and flocks shall there take their rest. ¹¹ And after a time there will be no verdure in it, by reason of its being parched up. [p] ye women who are coming from a goddess attend! For this is not a people, who have understanding; therefore he[c] the city. [v] the vineyard. who made them will not have pity on them; nor will he who formed them shew them any favour.

² Son of man, Why should the wood of the grape vine be distinguished from the wood of all the branchy trees which are among the trees of the forest? ³ Can men use the wood of it for any kind of workmanship? Can they make a pin of it to hang thereon any utensil? ⁴ Is it not in a peculiar manner doomed to be consumed by fire? Every year the fire consumeth what is lopped from it. And if a bit of it is left, is it fit for any kind of workmanship? ⁵ Even when entire it will be unfit for any work: how then, when fire hath burned it to a brand, can it serve for any work?

⁸ As for Ephraim, what hath he any more to do with idols? I humbled him and I will strengthen him. I am like a fruitful juniper; from me thou shalt find fruit.

¹⁵ But by the good ground are meant they, who with an honest and good heart, having heard the word, retain it, and perseveringly bring forth fruit.

⁵⁶ He who eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me and I in him.

⁶⁸ Whereupon Simon Peter answered him, Master, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of an everlasting life, ⁶⁹ and we believe and know that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

³¹ therefore to the Jews who believed in him Jesus said, If you continue steadily in this doctrine of mine, you are my disciples indeed;

²⁰ In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

⁵ I am the vine; you are the branches. He who continueth in me and I in him he it is who beareth much fruit. Because, separated from me, you can bear nothing: ⁶ if any one continueth not in me he is thrown away as the branch is when it is withered. Such indeed are gathered and thrown into the fire and burned. ⁷ If you continue in me, and my words continue in you, ask what you will and it will be done for you:

²³ I in them and thou in me, that they may be taken into union, and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them as thou hast loved me.

²³ And when he came and saw the grace of God, he was filled with joy and exhorted them all to adhere to the Lord with a firm determination of heart.

²² establishing and confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith. And because we must enter into the kingdom of God through many afflictions;

⁹ But you are not in a carnal state, but in a spiritual state, if indeed the spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any one hath not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his. ¹⁰ But if Christ be in you, the body indeed is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive, because of a justification;

⁸ For this I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. ⁹ Whereupon he said to me, My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is perfected in weakness. Therefore I will with the greatest pleasure, rather boast of my weaknesses, that the power of the Christ may shelter me. ¹⁰ I feel therefore a complacency in weaknesses, in reproaches, in difficulties, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ; for when I am weak, then am I strong.

⁵ Examine yourselves whether you be in the faith: prove yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you, unless you are somehow incapable of standing the test.

²⁰ I have been crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live"not I myself any more, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in flesh, I live by that belief which I have in the son of God, who loved me and delivered up himself for me.

¹⁷ that, by means of this belief, the Christ may dwell in your hearts; that you being rooted and grounded in love,

¹¹ filled with fruits of righteousness, which are by means of Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God.

²³ provided you continue in this belief, grounded and settled, and are not moved away from the hope of the glad tidings which you have heard, which have been proclaimed to this whole creation under heaven, of which I Paul was made a minister.

²⁷ to whom God hath been pleased to make known the riches of the glory of this mystery among the nations: namely Christ in you the hope of Glory,

⁶ As you therefore have received the Christ Jesus for your Lord, walk in him

⁵ therefore not being able to bear any longer, I sent to know your faith, for fear the tempter might have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

³⁹ But we are not of them who draw back for perdition; but of them who believe for the attainment of life.

⁶ he who saith he abideth in him, ought to walk as he walked.

²⁴ As for you, therefore, let that which you have heard from the beginning abide in you. If that which you have heard from the beginning abide in you, then you will abide in the Son, and in the Father. ²⁵ And this is the promise which he hath promised us, even the life which is everlasting. ²⁶ These things I have written to you with a view to them who are seducing you. ²⁷ As for you, the unction which you have received from him abideth in you, and you have no need that any one should teach you. As then this unction itself teacheth you concerning all, and is true, and is not a falsity; abide ye in him as it hath taught you. ²⁸ And now, children, abide in him, that when he shall appear we may have confidence, and not be made ashamed by him at his coming.

⁹ Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of the Christ, hath not God. He who abideth in the doctrine of the Christ hath both the Father and the Son.

²⁰ But as for you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying with a holy spirit, ²¹ keep yourselves in the love of God, as you expect the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for everlasting life;
