⁸ But Babylon is suddenly fallen and broken. Utter a lamentation for her. Get balm for her deadly wound; perhaps she may be cured.

⁶ Raise the mournful cry! for the day of the Lord is at hand, and destruction from God will come: ⁷ therefore every hand shall be enfeebled; and every man's heart shall be dismayed.

⁹ and behold here cometh a man riding in a chariot, and addressing me he said, "It is fallen! Babylon is fallen! and all her images, and all the works of her hands are dashed on the ground."

⁹ But now upon thee shall come these two things, suddenly, in one day. The loss of children and widowhood shall come suddenly on thee, in the midst of thy sorcery, in the full strength of thy mighty enchantments.

²² Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why is not healing come for the daughter of my people. [[c] The chorus, the inhabitants of the country. [J] Jehovah, [p] The prophet.]

¹² Thus said the Lord, I raised up affliction; thy wound was grievous; ¹³ there is none to plead thy cause; the attempts to cure thee increased thy pain; there is no relief for thee; ¹⁴ all thy friends forgot thee; they would make no inquiry for thee; because I inflicted on thee the wound of an enemy, a severe chastisement for all thine iniquity; thy sins had multiplied: ¹⁵ [Omitted]

¹¹ Go up, Galaad, and take balm for the virgin daughter of Egypt. In vain hast thou multiplied thy medicines; there is no cure for thee.

²⁰ Moab is put to shame; for he is utterly discomfited. Raise the mournful cry and scream; proclaim in Arnon, that Moab is destroyed.

³¹ Therefore raise on all sides the mournful cry for Moab; scream for the men of Keiradas-anchmon.

² Proclaim among the nations, publish and conceal not; say, Babylon is taken; Bel is confounded; the fearless, the luxurious Mairodach is delivered up.

⁴¹ How the boast of the whole earth is hunted and taken! how Babylon has become a desolation among the nations!

² Son of man prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord, Alas! alas! the day;

²⁴ For this cause a joint of a hand hath been sent from his presence, and it hath sketched this writing.

³¹ and Darius the Mede assumed the kingdom, being sixty two years of age.

⁸ And another angel followed saying, "It is fallen "Babylon is fallen! that great city; because she made all the nations drink of the poisonous wine of her fornication."

² and he cried mightily, saying with a loud voice, It is fallen! Babylon the great is fallen, and is become the habitation of demons, and a hold of every unclean spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird,

⁸ therefore in one day these calamities shall come upon her, pestilence and sorrow and famine; and she shall be consumed with fire; for the Lord God who judgeth her is mighty. ⁹ And the kings of the earth who have committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her will wail and beat their breasts for her, when they see the smoke of her burning ¹⁰ standing afar off for fear of her torment, saying, Alas! Alas! that great city Babylon! that 'mighty city! for in one hour thy judgment is come. ¹¹ The merchants of the earth also will weep and mourn for her; because no one any more buyeth their merchandize

¹⁷ for in one hour what a mass of wealth is laid waste! And every one sailing to the place, both mariners and traffickers by sea stood afar off ¹⁸ and screamed when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city was like this great city? ¹⁹ and they put dust on their heads and cried weeping and wailing and saying, Alas! Alas! the great city by which all who have ships at sea were enriched by means of her wealth; for in one hour she is desolated.
