² and though I have a gift of prophesy and understand all the mysteries and all this knowledge; and though I have all that faith, so as to remove mountains; if I have not love, I am nothing.

¹⁵ Then taking up his parable, he said, Balaam son of Beor saith; It is the saying of a man who is a true seer, ¹⁶ Who heareth the oracles of God, And hath knowledge from the Most High; Who in sleep hath seen a vision of God, and whose eyes were opened. ¹⁷ I can point to him, though he is not now; I hail him happy tho" he is not near. A star will arise out of Jacob; There shall rise up a man out of Israel, And he will smite the princes of Moab, And plunder all the sons of Seth: ¹⁸ And Edom shall be an inheritance, And Esau, his enemy, shall be a heritage. Though Israel hath done valiantly; ¹⁹ Yet one shall be raised up out of Jacob, Who will destroy him who escaped from a city. ²⁰ Then having taken a view of Amalek he took up his parable and said, Amalek is the head of nations; But their seed shall be destroyed. ²¹ Then having taken a view of the Kenite, he took up his parable and said, Strong is thy dwelling place. But though thou hast built thy nest upon a rock; ²² And though Beor hath crafty chickens; The Assyrians will captivate thee. ²³ Then looking at Og he took up his parable and said, Oh! Who can live when God will order such things! ²⁴ For bands of Kitians will issue forth, And afflict Assur, and afflict Hebrews: And they themselves shall likewise be destroyed.

²² Many will say to me on that day Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name cast out demons, and in thy name done many miracles, ²³ to whom I will then declare, I never acknowledged you; Depart from me ye who work iniquity.

¹¹ And he in reply said to them, To you it hath been granted to know the secrets of the reign of the heavens; but to them it hath not been granted.

²⁰ And Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief. For verily I say to you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you might say to that mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it would remove; and nothing would be impossible to you:

¹⁹ and seeing a fig tree near the way, he went to it and found nothing thereon but leaves. Whereupon he saith to it, Henceforward let no fruit ever grow on thee. And immediately the fig tree withered.

²¹ And Jesus answering, said to them, Verily I say to you, if you have faith, without wavering, you may do not only as much as is done to this fig tree; but if you should even say to that mountain, Be thou lifted up and thrown into the sea, it shall be done.

²² In reply to which, Jesus saith to them, Have faith in God. ²³ For verily I say to you, If one should say to that mountain, Be thou lifted up and cast into the sea; and have no doubt in his mind, but believe that what he saith cometh to pass; whatever he may command shall be done for him.

⁵ Upon this the disciples said to the Lord, Increase our faith. ⁶ Whereupon the Lord said to them, If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you might say to that sycamine tree, Be thou rooted up and planted in the sea. And it would obey you.

²⁵ For, that you, brethren, may not have too high an opinion of your selves, I would not have you ignorant of this secret, That a partial blindness hath come upon Israel until the fulness of the Gentiles shall have come in,

²⁵ Now to him who is able to establish you according to my glad tidings and the proclamation of Jesus Christ; according to the disclosure of a secret which was concealed in times of old,

¹ In this manner let a man reckon us, as servants of Christ and stewards of divine mysteries.

¹⁹ The circumcision is nothing, and the uncircumcision is nothing, in comparison with keeping the commandments of God.

⁴ Therefore in respect to the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world: and that there is no other God but one.

⁸ For to one is given, by the spirit, a word of wisdom; and to another, a word of knowledge according to the same spirit; ⁹ and to another, faith, by the same spirit; and to another, gifts of healing, by the same spirit; ¹⁰ and to another, mighty powers of working miracles; and to another, the gift of prophecy; and to another, that of discerning spirits; and to another, divers languages; and to another, the interpretation of languages.

²⁸ whom God hath placed in the congregation; first, apostles, secondly, prophets, thirdly, teachers, then miraculous powers, then gifts of healing, helps, governments, different languages.

¹ Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, if I have not love, I am but a sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal;

³ And though I distribute all my substance to feed the poor, and deliver up my body to be burned, if I have not love, it profiteth me nothing.

¹ Be zealous then in the pursuit of this love, and aspire after spiritual gifts, but chiefly that you may prophesy. ² For he who speaketh in a strange language, speaketh not to men but to God: for none understandeth; and with a spirit he speaketh mysteries.

⁶ For instance, should I, brethren, come to you, speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I explain to you what I say, be it either a revelation, or science, or a prophecy, or a doctrine. ⁷ In like manner with regard to inanimate things which give a sound, whether pipe or kithara, unless they produce distinct notes, how can it be known what that is, which is played on the pipe or kithara. ⁸ For if even a trumpet give an undistinguishable sound who will prepare himself for battle? ⁹ So also with regard to you, unless you utter with the tongue a discourse of a clear signification, how can that which is spoken be known? You will be indeed talking to the air.

³⁹ So then, brethren, be ambitious of prophesying, and prohibit not the speaking with tongues.

²² If any one loveth not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be an Anathema. Maranatha.

¹¹ I am become a foolish boaster! you have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you. For I am not a whit behind the chiefest apostles, although I am nothing.

¹⁶ This then I say, walk by the spirit and by no means fulfil the lust of the flesh.

²² But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness,

³ For if any one thinketh himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

⁴ by the bare reading of which you may perceive my knowledge in this secret of the Christ,

¹⁹ particularly for me, that to me a word may be given, that with the opening of my mouth, and with freedom am plainness of speech, I may make known the secret of the glad tidings,

²⁶ the mystery which was hidden from the ages and from the generations, but is now manifested to his saints;

¹⁶ [and unquestionably great is the mystery of this religion,] God hath been manifested in flesh, justified by spirit, hath appeared to messengers, been proclaimed among nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

⁸ He who doth not love hath not known God, for God is love.

²⁰ If anyone saith, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar. For how can he who doth not love his brother whom he hath seen, love God, whom he hath not seen? ²¹ Besides, we have this commandment from him, That he who loveth God, love his brother also:
