² One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe: And the other basket had very naughty figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.

⁴ What more could have been done to My vineyard, that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected that it should bring forth grapes, it brought forth wild grapes?

⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah His pleasant plant: And He looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

⁵ "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel; 'Like these good figs, so I will acknowledge those who are carried away captive of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans for their good. ⁶ For I will set my eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them to this land again: And I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant them, and not pluck them up. ⁷ And I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD: And they shall be My people, and I will be their God: For they shall return to Me with their whole heart. ⁸ And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil'; surely thus says the LORD, 'So I will give Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, who remain in this land, and those who dwell in the land of Egypt: ⁹ And I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their hurt, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places where I shall drive them. ¹⁰ And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, until they are consumed from off the land that I gave to them and to their fathers.' "

¹⁷ thus says the LORD of hosts; 'Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.

² "Son of man, what is the vine tree more than any other tree, or than a branch which is among the trees of the forest? ³ Shall wood be taken from it to do any work? Or will men take a peg of it to hang any vessel upon it? ⁴ Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devours both the ends of it, and the middle of it is burned. Is it suitable for any work? ⁵ Behold, when it was whole, it was not suitable for work: How much less shall it be suitable for any work, when the fire has devoured it, and it is burned?

¹⁰ I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the first ripe fruit in the fig tree at her first harvest-time: But they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves to that shame; and their abominations were in accordance with that which they loved.

¹ Woe is me! For I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grape-gleanings of the vintage: There is no cluster to eat: My soul desired the first ripe fruit.

¹² "But you all have profaned it, in that you all say, 'The table of the LORD is polluted; and its fruit, even His food, is contemptible.' ¹³ You all also said, 'Behold, what a weariness it is!' And you all have snuffed at it", says the LORD of hosts; "and you all brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; in this manner you all brought an offering: Should I accept this from your hand?", says the LORD. ¹⁴ "But cursed be the deceiver, which has in his flock a male, and vows, and sacrifices to the Lord a corrupt thing: For I am a great King", says the LORD of hosts, "and My name is frightening among the heathen."

¹³ You are the salt of the earth: But if the salt has lost his savor, with what shall it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden underfoot by men.
