²³ And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice, out of the midst of the darkness, the mountain also burning with fire, then drew ye near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders,

¹⁸ And, all the people, were witnessing the voices and the torches, and the sound of the horn, and the mountain, smoking,––so then the people were struck with awe and shrank back, and stood afar off. ¹⁹ And they said unto Moses, Speak, thou, with us, and we will hear,––but let not God speak, with us, lest we die.

¹⁸ For ye have not approached––unto, a searching and scorching fire, and gloom, and mist, and tempest, ¹⁹ And a trumpets peal,––and a sound of things spoken:––from which they who heard excused themselves, lest there should be added to them, a word; ²⁰ For they could not bear, that which was being enjoined,––and, should a beast be touching the mountain, it shall be stoned; ²¹ And, so fearful was that which was showing itself, Moses, said––I am terrified, and do tremble!
