¹⁷ By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac: he who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only begotten son,

¹⁶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

¹² For if there is first a willing mind, it is acceptable, according to what a man has, and not according to that he does not have.

⁶ But he whose descent is not traced from them received a tithe from Abraham, and blessed him who had the promises.

² My brethren, count it all joy when you encounter various trials; ³ Knowing that the trying of your faith produces endurance. ⁴ And let endurance have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

²¹ Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered Isaac his son upon the altar? ²² You see that faith was active with his works, and by works was faith made perfect; ²³ And the scripture was fulfilled which says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. ²⁴ You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

¹¹ Behold, we count as happy those who endured. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the outcome the Lord brought about; that the Lord is full of compassion, and of tender mercy.

⁶ In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a time you may have to suffer various trials: ⁷ That the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold, which perishes, though it is tested by fire, might be found to result in praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

¹² Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial which comes upon you to test you, as though some strange thing was happened to you:

¹⁰ Because you have kept my word to patiently endure, I will keep you from the hour of trial, which shall come upon all the world, to test those who live upon the earth.
