¹⁷ And this is what I mean, that the law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant which was previously ratified by God, and thus make the promise void.

⁶⁸ Blessed is the Lord God of Israel; for he has visited and redeemed his people, ⁶⁹ And has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; ⁷⁰ As he spoke by the mouths of his holy prophets, from long ago: ⁷¹ That we would be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; ⁷² To show the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; ⁷³ The oath which he swore to our father Abraham, ⁷⁴ That he would grant to us, that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, ⁷⁵ In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our lives. ⁷⁶ And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High: for you shall go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; ⁷⁷ To give to his people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins; ⁷⁸ Through the tender mercy of our God, the sunrise from on high will visit us, ⁷⁹ To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

¹⁷ For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

⁵⁶ Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. ⁵⁷ Then the Jews said to him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham? ⁵⁸ Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Before Abraham was, I am.

⁶ And God spoke to this effect, That his descendants would be strangers in a foreign land; and that they would bring them into bondage, and mistreat them for four hundred years.

³ What if some did not believe? shall their unbelief nullify the faithfulness of God?

²⁵ Whom God has set forth to be an atoning sacrifice through faith in his blood. He did this to declare his righteousness, for in the forbearance of God, he passed over sins of the past;

¹³ For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not given to Abraham, or to his descendants, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. ¹⁴ For if those who are of the law are heirs, then faith is made void, and the promise is made invalid:

¹² What I mean to say is that every one of you says, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

¹⁷ For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with eloquent words of wisdom, lest the cross of Christ should be emptied of its power.

²⁹ But this I say, brethren, the time is short: from now on let those who have wives be as though they had none;

¹⁹ What do I say then? that an idol is anything, or that food offered in sacrifice to idols is anything?

²⁰ For as many as are the promises of God, in him they are yes. And so our Amen is through him, to the glory of God.

⁶ Now this I say, He who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully.

¹⁵ Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it is ratified, no man annuls or adds to it.

²¹ Is the law then against the promises of God? Absolutely not: for if there had been a law given which could impart life, then righteousness truly would have been through the law.

⁴ You who would be justified by the law, you have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen from grace.

¹⁶ This I say, Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the desires of the flesh.

¹⁷ This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as other Gentiles walk, in the futility of their minds,

⁴ And this I say, lest any man should deceive you with enticing words.

¹³ For when God made a promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself, ¹⁴ Saying, Surely I will bless you and I will multiply you. ¹⁵ And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. ¹⁶ For truly, men swear by one who is greater than themselves: and an oath given for confirmation puts an end to all disputes. ¹⁷ Therefore God, wanting to show more clearly to the heirs of the promise the immutable nature of his purpose, confirmed it by an oath: ¹⁸ That by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us might have a strong encouragement.

¹⁸ So, there is a setting aside of the former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness,

¹³ These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off; and they were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

¹⁷ By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac: he who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only begotten son, ¹⁸ Of whom it was said, In Isaac shall your descendants be named: ¹⁹ For he reasoned that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from which, figuratively, he did receive him back.

³⁹ And all these, having obtained approval through their faith, did not receive the promise, ⁴⁰ Because God had provided something better for us, that without us they should not be made perfect.

¹¹ Seeking to find to whom and when the Spirit of Christ within them was pointing, when he testified beforehand of the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that should follow. ¹² It was revealed to them that they did not serve themselves, but you, in the things which have now been made known to you by those who preached the gospel to you through the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven; things into which angels desire to look.
