¹³ The hearers of the law are not righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be righteous.

¹ »Israel, listen to these laws and teachings! If you obey them you will live! Go in and take the land that Jehovah the God of your fathers is giving you.

¹ Moses called all the people of Israel, and said: »Hear, O Israel, the regulations and laws I declare to you today. Learn them and obey them!

³ »Listen, O Israel, and be careful to obey these laws. Things will go well for you and your population will increase in a land flowing with milk and honey. This is what Jehovah the God of your ancestors promised you.

¹² »It is not in heaven, that you should say: Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may obey it? ¹³ »This commandment is not on the other side of the sea. You do not have to ask: Who will cross the sea to get it for us so that we can hear it and obey it? ¹⁴ »No, these words are very near you. They are in your mouth and in your heart so that you will obey them.

² Do not enter into judgment with your servant, for in your sight no man living is righteous.

¹¹ ‘»»I gave them my laws and made my rules known to them. If people obey them they will live.

³⁰ »Son of man, your people are talking about you by the walls and in the doorways of their homes. They are saying to each other: ‘Let's go and hear the word that has come from Jehovah.’ ³¹ »Then they come to you, as if they are still my people, and they sit down in front of you. They listen to what you say, but they do not do it. They say that they love me, but in their hearts they chase dishonest profits. ³² »To them you are nothing more than a singer with a beautiful voice who sings love songs or a musician who plays an instrument. They listen to your words, but they do not do them. ³³ »When all your words come true, and they certainly will come true, these people will know that a prophet has been among them.«

²⁵ A lawyer stood up to test him. He asked: »Teacher what shall I do to inherit everlasting life?« ²⁶ He said: »What is written in the law? How do you read it?« ²⁷ He answered: »Love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your life, with all your strength and with all your mind. (Feelings and total existence) (Might and total thinking capacity) And you should love your neighbor as yourself.« (Deuteronomy 6:5) (Leviticus 19:18) ²⁸ He told him: »You answered correctly, do this and you will live.« ²⁹ Desiring to justify himself, he said to Jesus: »Who is my neighbor?«

¹⁴ »I tell you the tax collector and not the Pharisee was right with God when he went home. He who exalts himself will be humbled! He who humbles himself will be exalted!«

²¹ He answered, »My mother and my brother are these who hear the word of God, and do it.«

³⁹ »Through him all who believe are justified from all things. You could not be justified through the Law of Moses.

²⁵ Circumcision is a benefit if you obey the law. But if you are a transgressor of the law your circumcision becomes uncircumcision.

⁵ Moses writes down the righteousness that is of the law. The man who has practiced those things shall live by them.

²⁰ No flesh will be justified before God by works of the law. Knowledge of sin comes from the law.

²³ For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God

³⁰ If God is one he will justify the circumcised by faith, and the uncircumcised through faith.

² If Abraham was declared righteous by works, he could boast, but not to God. ³ For what does the scriptures say? »Abraham believed Jehovah, and it was counted to him as righteousness.« (Genesis 15:6) ⁴ The pay is counted to the man who works. It is not as grace but as a debt. ⁵ He who does not work but believes in him who justifies (absolves) the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

¹⁶ Yet we know that a man is not righteous by the works of the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ. We believed on Christ Jesus, that we might be righteous by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law. The works of the law justify no one.

¹¹ The fact that the Law justifies no man before God is evident. The righteous will live by faith. ¹² The Law is not based on faith. »He that does them will live by them.«

⁴ You who seek to be righteous by Law are separated from Christ. You have fallen away from grace.

²² Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, who deceive themselves. ²³ For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror. ²⁴ He sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what manner of man he was. ²⁵ But he who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and so continues, being not a hearer who forgets but a doer who works, this man will be blessed in what he does.

²¹ Was Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? ²² You see that faith acted with his works, and works made faith perfect (complete). ²³ The scripture was fulfilled which says: »Abraham believed Jehovah and it was reckoned (imputed) (considered) (credited) to him for righteousness.« He was called »Jehovah’s friend« (Genesis 15:6) ( Isaiah 41:8). ²⁴ You see that a man is justified (declared and pronounced righteous) by works, and not by faith alone. ²⁵ Rahab the harlot was justified by her works. When she received the messengers she sent them out another way.

²⁹ If you know that he is righteous you know that every one who practices righteousness is born of him.

⁷ My little children let no man deceive you! He who practices righteousness is righteous, even as he [Christ] is righteous.
