⁶⁰ He abandoned his dwelling place in Shiloh, the tent where he had lived among humans.

¹ The whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh. They set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. The land was subdued before them.

³ This man went to Shiloh every year to worship and to make offerings to Jehovah (YHWH) of Hosts. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas were the priests of Jehovah at Shiloh.

⁶ When the Philistines heard the noise, they asked: »What is all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?« The Philistines found out that Jehovah’s ark was brought into the camp. ⁷ Then they were frightened and said: »A god has come into their camp.« They also said: »Oh no! Nothing like this has ever happened before. ⁸ »We are in trouble now! Who will deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with plagues in the desert wilderness. ⁹ »Be strong, Philistines, and conduct your selves like men (with courage). Or else you will serve the Hebrews as they served you. Act like men and fight.« ¹⁰ The Philistines fought and defeated Israel. Every Israelite soldier fled to his tent. It was a major defeat in which thirty thousand Israelite foot soldiers died. ¹¹ The Ark of the Covenant was captured. Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

⁴ They sent men to Shiloh to bring back the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah of Hosts who is enthroned over the angels. Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas came along with God’s ark. ⁵ When Jehovah’s Ark came into the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth shook.

¹² »But go to my place in Shiloh, where I made my name dwell from the beginning, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. ¹³ »For the reason that you did all these things,« says Jehovah, »I spoke to you. I rose up early and spoke. But you did not hear, and I called you but you did not answer. ¹⁴ »Consider what I will do to the house that is called by my name. It is the house in which you trust. It is the place I gave you and your fathers, as I did to Shiloh.

⁶ If you continue to disobey I will do to this Temple what I did to Shiloh, and all the nations of the world will use the name of this city as a curse.’«’« ⁷ The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard me saying these things in the Temple. ⁸ As soon as I had finished saying all that Jehovah commanded me to say, they grabbed me and shouted: »You ought to be killed for this! ⁹ »Why have you said in Jehovah’s name that this Temple will become like Shiloh and that this city will be destroyed and no one will live in it?’« Then the people crowded around me.
