³ You inspect my path and my lying down. You are intimately acquainted with my ways.

¹⁰ Jacob left Beer-sheba and traveled toward Haran. ¹¹ As soon as the sun went down he stopped for the night. He took one of the stones from that place, put it under his head, and lay down there. ¹² He had a dream in which he saw a stairway set up on the earth with its top reaching up to heaven. He saw the angels of God going up and coming down on it. ¹³ Jehovah was standing above the stairway. He proclaimed: »I am Jehovah, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give the land on which you are lying to you and your descendants. ¹⁴ »Your descendants will be like the dust on the earth. You will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. Every family on earth will be blessed through you and through your descendants. ¹⁵ »Remember, I am with you. I will watch over you wherever you go. I will also bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I do what I have promised you.« ¹⁶ Jacob woke up from his sleep and said: »Truly, Jehovah is in this place, and I did not know it!« ¹⁷ He was filled with reverence. He said: »This is an awesome place! Certainly, this is the house of God and the gateway to the heavens!«

¹⁴ He put troops everywhere in Edom. All the Edomites were David’s subjects. Everywhere David went Jehovah gave him victories.

² Late one afternoon, David got up from his nap and went to the palace roof. He walked around on the roof. He saw a woman taking a bath. She was very beautiful. ³ He sent a messenger to find out who she was. He learned that she was Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite. ⁴ So David sent messengers to get her. She came to him and they had sexual intercourse. She had just cleansed herself after her monthly period. Then she went home. ⁵ The woman became pregnant. So she sent someone to tell David that she was pregnant.

²⁷ When her mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her to his home. She became his wife. Then she gave birth to a son. However, Jehovah considered David’s actions evil.

⁹ »‘Why have you disobeyed my commands? Why did you do this evil thing? You had Uriah killed in battle! You let the Ammonites kill him. Then you took his wife! ¹⁰ »‘In every generation some of your descendants will die a violent death because you have disobeyed me and have taken Uriah’s wife. ¹¹ »‘I swear to you that I will cause someone from your own family to bring trouble to you. You will see it when I take your wives from you and give them to another man. He will have intercourse with them in broad daylight. ¹² »‘You did this secretly. I will make this happen in broad daylight in front of all Israel.’«

²⁶ »You write down bitter things against me and make me inherit the sins of my youth. ²⁷ »You fasten my feet in shackles. You keep close watch on all my paths by putting marks on the soles of my feet.

¹⁶ »Surely then you will count my steps but not keep track of my sin. ¹⁷ »My transgressions will be sealed up in a bag. You will cover over my sin.

⁴ »Does he not see my ways and count my every step?

³ He will not allow your foot to slip. He who keeps you will not slumber. ⁴ Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. ⁵ Jehovah is your keeper. Jehovah is your shade on your right hand. ⁶ The sun will not strike you by day. The moon will not strike you by night. ⁷ Jehovah will protect you from all evil. He will protect (preserve) you. ⁸ May Jehovah guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever.

²⁰ Why will you be intimate with an immoral woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? ²¹ The ways of man are before the eyes of Jehovah. He ponders all his paths.

¹⁸ If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with you.

¹⁴ For God will bring every work into judgment with every secret thing, whether it is good or whether it is evil.

¹⁵ You are in for trouble, if you try to hide your plans from Jehovah! You think what you do in the dark cannot be seen. So you ask: »Who sees us, who knows us?«

²⁴ »Can a man hide himself in hiding places so I do not see him?« asks Jehovah. »Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?« Declares Jehovah.

¹² »His winnowing shovel is in his hand. He will clean his threshing floor and gather his wheat into a barn. He will then burn the husks in a fire that cannot be put out.«

⁷⁰ Jesus replied: »Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil (false accuser) (slanderer) (demon)«. ⁷¹ He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot one of the twelve, for he would betray him.

² The devil influenced the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son. So he betrayed him during the meal.

²¹ After Jesus said this he was troubled in spirit and said: One of you will betray me.«

³ Peter said: »Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the money from the land sale? ⁴ While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your power? Why did you conceive this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.«
