¹⁰ »By the living God Jehovah,« David declared, »I know that Jehovah will kill Saul, either when his time comes to die a natural death or when he dies in battle.

⁴ He said to the young man carrying his weapons: »Draw your sword and kill me. That way these godless Philistines will not gloat over me and kill me.« But the young man was too terrified to do it. So Saul took his own sword and threw himself on it.

¹⁰ So Haman was put to death by hanging him on the pillar he made for Mordecai. Then the king's rage subsided.

¹⁹ »He will keep you safe from six troubles, and when the seventh one comes, no harm will touch you:

¹⁶ Their mischief returns upon their own heads. Their violence descends on their own heads.

¹⁹ The righteous person has many troubles, but Jehovah rescues him from all of them.

²⁴ When he falls, he will not be thrown down headfirst because Jehovah holds on to his hand.

¹⁴ Blessed is the man reverencing God. He who hardens his heart will fall into trouble. ¹⁵ Like a roaring lion and a charging bear, so is a wicked ruler over the helpless people. ¹⁶ The ruler who lacks understanding is a great oppressor. He who hates covetousness will prolong his days. ¹⁷ A violent and bloodthirsty man will run to the pit; let no man help him. ¹⁸ Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved: but he who is perverse in his ways will fall at once.

² The virgin of Israel has fallen. She will not rise again. She has been thrown down upon her own land. There is none to raise her up.

¹⁴ »They who swear by the sin of Samaria. They will say: ‘As your god lives, O Dan, the way Beersheba lives.’ They will fall and never rise up again.«

⁸ Do not rejoice against me, O my enemy! When I fall, I will arise. When I sit in darkness, Jehovah will be a light to me. ⁹ I will bear the indignation of Jehovah, because I have sinned against him. He will plead my cause, and execute judgment for me. He will bring me forth to the light and I will see his righteousness. ¹⁰ My enemy will see it and she will be filled with shame. She will ask: »Where is Jehovah your God?« My eyes will look upon her and she will be trampled down like the mire of the streets.

²³ Immediately the angel of God killed him, because he did not give God the glory. He was eaten by worms and died.

⁸ We do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning our affliction that began in Asia. We were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, so much that we despaired even of life. ⁹ Yes, we have had the sentence of death within ourselves that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead. ¹⁰ God delivered us out of so great a death, and will deliver us. We have set our hope on him. He will deliver us!

⁸ We are pressed (afflicted) (troubled) on every side, but not crushed. We are perplexed yet not to despair. ⁹ We are persecuted, yet not forsaken. We are struck down, yet not destroyed. ¹⁰ We always carry in the body the death of Jesus, that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. ¹¹ For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our mortal flesh. ¹² So then death works in us, but life in you.

²³ Are they ministers of Christ? I speak as a fool. I am more in labors more abundant, beaten beyond number, in prisons more frequent, in deaths often. ²⁴ Of the Jews five times I received forty stripes less one. ²⁵ Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, I suffered shipwreck three times, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. ²⁶ In journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by my own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brothers; ²⁷ In weariness and painfulness, in watching often, in hunger and thirst, in fasting often, in cold and nakedness.

³ When they say, »Peace and security!« then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come to a pregnant woman. They will not escape.

²⁰ »Rejoice over her, you heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, for God pronounced judgment for you against her.« ²¹ A mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and hurled it into the sea.
