⁹ We prayed to God and stationed men on watch against them day and night.

⁹ Then Jacob prayed: »O God of my father Abraham, the God of my father Isaac, O Jehovah, you said to me: ‘Go back to your country and your family and I will be good to you.’ ¹⁰ »I am less than nothing in comparison with all your love and your faithfulness to me your servant. I only had a stick in my hand when I traveled across Jordan. Now I have become two armies. ¹¹ »Save me from the hand of Esau, my brother. I fear that he will attack me and kill both mothers and children. ¹² »You said, ‘I will make sure that you are prosperous and that your descendants will be as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. No one will be able to count them because there are so many.’«

²⁸ The man said: »Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel (He Struggles With God), because you have struggled with God and with men and you have won.«

¹⁴ Hezekiah read the letters from the messengers. Then he went to Jehovah’s Temple and shared them with Jehovah. ¹⁵ He prayed: »Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, you are enthroned above the angels. You alone are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made heaven and earth. ¹⁶ »Turn your ear (listen) (pay attention) to me, O Jehovah, and listen. Open your eyes, Jehovah, and see. Listen to the message Sennacherib sent to defy the living God. ¹⁷ »It is true Jehovah. The kings of Assyria have devastated nations. ¹⁸ »They threw the gods from these countries into fires because these gods are not real gods. They are only wooden and stone statues made by human hands. So the Assyrians have destroyed them. ¹⁹ »Rescue us from Assyria's control, O Jehovah our God, so that all the kingdoms on earth will know that you alone are Jehovah God.«

¹¹ And our adversaries kept saying: »They will not know and they will not see until we come right in among them and put them to death. We will cause the work to cease.«

¹⁶ But I call on God, and Jehovah saves me. ¹⁷ Morning, noon, and night I complain and murmur. He listens to my voice. ¹⁸ In peace he will rescue me from the war waged against me. There are many against me. ¹⁹ God will listen and answer them. The one who has sat enthroned from the beginning will deal with them. They never change. They never respect God. ²⁰ He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him. He has violated his covenant. ²¹ His speech was smoother than butter, but his heart was war! His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. ²² Throw your burden upon Jehovah and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be shaken!

¹⁵ »Call on me in times of trouble. I will rescue you, and you will honor me.«

⁴¹ »Watch and pray continually that you do not enter into temptation!«

¹¹ They were all very angry and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus. ¹² He went to the mountain to pray and he continued all night in prayer to God.

³⁶ »Be on the watch all the time. Pray for the strength to escape all these things in order to stand before the Son of man.«

²⁴ When they heard they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said: »Jehovah, you are God, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all in them. ²⁵ »You spoke by the mouth of your servant David: Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? (Psalm 2:1) ²⁶ »The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against Jehovah, and against his Christ. (Psalm 2:2) ²⁷ Truly both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the people of the nations and the people of Israel, were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you have anointed. ²⁸ »They were there to do the things your hand and council foreordained to occur. ²⁹ »Now Jehovah behold their threats and grant that your servants keep speaking your word with boldness. ³⁰ »You extend your hand to heal and signs and wonders appear in the name of your holy servant Jesus.«

⁸ Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion walks about, seeking whom he may devour (consume).
