⁶ »Let your ear now take note and let your eyes be open. Please give ear to the prayer of your servant. At this time, day and night I pray for the children of Israel, your servants. I put before you the sins of the children of Israel that we have done against you: truly, my father’s people and I are sinners.

⁶ »Our ancestors were unfaithful and did what Jehovah our God considered evil. They deserted him. They turned away from Jehovah’s tent and turned their backs on him.

¹¹ »Give praise to Jehovah, the God of your fathers, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the strange women.«

⁶ I said, »O my God, shame keeps me from lifting up my face (praying) to you (being in your presence), my God: for our sins have increased higher than our heads and our evil-doing has come up to heaven. ⁷ »From the days of our fathers till this day we have been great sinners. Because of our sins, the kings of the lands captured us. We were given to the sword and to prison and to loss of goods and to shame of face, as it is this day.

¹ While Ezra was saying his prayer and his confession of wrongdoing he wept and fell down before the house of God. A very great number of men and women and children out of Israel came together around him, for the people were weeping bitterly.

⁵ I confessed my sins to you, and I did not cover up my guilt. I decided to confess them to you, O Jehovah. Then you forgave all my sins.

¹⁵ Jehovah’s eyes watch over righteous people. His ears hear their cry for help.

¹⁷ Morning, noon, and night I complain and murmur. He listens to my voice.

¹ ([Sons of Korah]) O Jehovah, God of my salvation I cry out to you day and night.

⁶ We have sinned like our fathers! We have committed iniquity and have behaved wickedly.

² Jehovah, do hear my voice! Let your ears listen to the voice of my supplications.

⁵ »Woe to me!« I cried. »I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips (a sinner) and I live among a people of unclean (filthy) lips (speech) (language). My eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of Hosts.«

⁶ All of us have become unclean, and all our righteous acts are like permanently stained rags. All of us wither like leaves, and our sins carry us away like the wind. ⁷ No one calls on your name or tries to hold on to you. You have hidden your face from us. You allowed us be ruined by our sins.

³⁹ What protest may a living man make? Can a man protest about the punishment for his sin? ⁴⁰ Let us search and put our ways to the test. Let us turn again to Jehovah. ⁴¹ Let us lift up our hearts along with our hands to God in heaven. ⁴² For we have done wrong. We have rebelled against your law. We have not received your forgiveness.

⁷ Our fathers were sinners and are dead. The weight of their evil deeds is on us.

⁴ And I prayed to Jehovah my God, and made confession, and said, »Oh, Jehovah, the great and fear-inspiring (awesome) God, who keeps his covenant and loving kindness for those who love him and keep his commandments.

¹⁷ »Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant, and to his supplications, and cause your face to shine upon your sanctuary that is desolate, for Jehovah’s sake. ¹⁸ »O my God, incline your ear, and hear! Open your eyes, and behold our desolations and the city that is called by your name. We do not present our supplications before you because of our righteous merits, but according to your many mercies.

²⁰ While I was speaking, in prayer, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Jehovah my God for the holy mountain of my God;

³⁷ She had been a widow eighty-four years. She never left the temple. She worshipped and fasted with supplications day and night.

⁷ »Should God avenge his chosen that cry to him day and night, and yet he is longsuffering over them?

³ We all once lived in the lust of our flesh, indulging the desires (lusts) of the flesh and of the mind. We were by nature children of anger and violent passion, like everyone else.

⁵ Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, has her hope set on God, and continues in supplications and prayers day and night.

³ I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my forefathers did, that without ceasing, I remember you in my prayers, day and night.

⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
