²⁴ They answered Joshua: »For the reason that it was absolutely told to your servants, how Jehovah your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and destroy all the inhabitants of the land. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you. So we did this thing.

The inhabitants of Canaan are filled with fear. ¹⁶ »Terror and dread fall upon them. By the greatness of your arm they are motionless as stone. Until your people pass over, O Jehovah, until the people pass over whom you have purchased.

³¹ »I will make the borders of your land extend from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Mediterranean Sea and from the desert to the Euphrates River. I will give you power over the inhabitants of the land. You will drive them out as you advance. ³² »Do not make any agreement with them or with their gods. ³³ »Do not allow them to live in your land for they will make you sin against me. If you serve their gods it will be a snare to you.«

⁵¹ Tell the Israelites: »You will cross the Jordan River and enter Canaan. ⁵² »As you advance, force out all the people who live there. Get rid of all their stone and metal idols, and destroy all their places of worship.

⁵⁵ »If you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those that are left will be as troublesome as splinters in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will fight against you. ⁵⁶ »If you do not drive them out, I will destroy you, as I planned to destroy them.«

¹ »Jehovah your God will bring you into the land you are to possess. He will clear away many nations ahead of you. The nations he will clear: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, and the Canaanites, the Perizzites, Hivites, and the Jebusites. These seven nations are larger and mightier than you. ² »Jehovah your God will deliver them to you. You must crush them! Completely destroy them. You should make no covenant with them. Do not show them mercy.

²³ »Jehovah your God will deliver them over to you. He will throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed. ²⁴ »He will deliver their kings into your hand. You will make their name perish from under heaven. They will not be able to stand before you for you will destroy them.

¹⁵ »This is what you must do to all the cities that are far away that do not belong to the nations nearby. ¹⁶ »Do not spare anyone's life in the cities of these nations Jehovah your God is giving you as your property. ¹⁷ »You must capture the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites for Jehovah and completely destroy them. Jehovah your God commands you.

⁹ They said: »From a very far country, your servants came because of the name of Jehovah your God, for we have heard about him and all he did in Egypt;

⁴ Satan answered Jehovah: »Skin for skin! Certainly, a man will give everything he has for his life.

²⁸ »Do not fear those who kill the body. They are not able to take away your [everlasting] life. Instead, fear him who is able to destroy both life and body in the ever-burning fires. (Greek: Gehenna: continuously burning trash fires in the valley of Hinnom.)
