⁹ She said to the men: »I know Jehovah has given you the land and the terror of you has fallen on us. All the inhabitants of the land are afraid of you.

¹⁴ After Lot had parted from Abram, Jehovah said to Abram: »Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. ¹⁵ »All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring (descendants) from generation to generation. ¹⁶ »I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If anyone could count the dust, your offspring could be counted. ¹⁷ »Go walk through the length and breadth of the land that I am giving to you.«

¹⁸ On that day Jehovah made a covenant with Abram. He said: »To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, ¹⁹ the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, ²⁰ the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, ²¹ the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.«

⁵ Jacob and his family traveled through Canaan. God terrified the people in the towns so much that no one dared bother them.

⁶ »I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.« Moses covered his face, because he was afraid to look at God. ⁷ Jehovah said: »I have seen how my people are suffering as slaves in Egypt. I have heard them beg for my help because of the way they are being mistreated. I feel sorry for them. ⁸ »I have come down to rescue them from the Egyptians. I will bring my people out of Egypt into a country where there is good land, rich with milk and honey. I will give them the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites now live.

¹⁵ »The sheiks (chiefs) of Edom were dismayed. The leaders of Moab are griped with fear. The inhabitants of Canaan are filled with fear. ¹⁶ »Terror and dread fall upon them. By the greatness of your arm they are motionless as stone. Until your people pass over, O Jehovah, until the people pass over whom you have purchased.

¹¹ »Now I know that Jehovah is greater than all the other gods. It was proven when they treated the people with contempt.«

²⁷ »I will send my terror ahead of you and throw any nation you meet into a panic. I will make all your enemies flee from you.

²⁵ »From this day forward I will make all the people and nations through out the earth afraid of you. They will hear reports about you and tremble and be in anguish because of you.

²⁵ »No man will be able to stand before you. Jehovah your God will lay the dread of you and the fear of you on all the land where you set foot. This is as he promised you.

¹⁰ »All the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of Jehovah, and they will be afraid of you.

⁸ »When the Most High gave nations their inheritance, when he divided the descendants of Adam, he set up borders for the tribes corresponding to the number of the sons of Israel.

¹¹ »As soon as we heard these things we became discouraged. No man had courage because of you. Jehovah your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.

¹⁴ His friend responded: »This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon, the son of Joash. For God delivered Midian and its army to this man of Israel.«

¹⁵ There was panic among the army in the field. All the troops in the military post trembled with fear. The raiding party also trembled in fear. The earth shook, and there was a panic sent from God. ¹⁶ Saul’s watchmen at Gibeah of Benjamin could see the crowd in the Philistine camp dispersing in all directions.

¹⁰ »Even the bravest man with a heart like a lion would lose his courage. All Israel knows that your father is a mighty man and the men with him are brave.

¹⁵ Naaman returned to Elisha with all his men and said: »Now I realize there is no god but the God of Israel. Please accept a gift from me.«

⁶ Jehovah made the Syrians hear what sounded like the advance of a large army with horses and chariots. The Syrians thought that the king of Israel had hired Hittite and Egyptian kings and their armies to attack them.

²⁵ »I know that my redeemer lives, and in later days he will take his stand on the earth.

¹⁰ The wicked sees this and becomes angry. He angrily grits his teeth and disappears. The hope of the wicked will perish (be destroyed).

¹⁶ The highest heaven belongs to Jehovah, but he has given the earth to the sons of men.

¹² Though a sinner does evil a hundred times, and he lives a long life, yet I know that it will be well with those who respect (reverence) God and worship him.

¹ Jehovah rides on a swift cloud and is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before him. The hearts of the Egyptians melt (their courage fails) within them.

⁵ »I used my great strength and my powerful arm to make the earth along with the people and the animals on it. I give it to anyone I please.

¹⁰ She is empty and void, a city laid waste! The hearts melt and the knees knock together. There is pain in all the hips and their faces have all grown pale.

¹⁵ »‘Is it lawful for me to do what I wish with what is mine? Or is your eye jealous because I am generous?’

¹ Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and evidence of things not seen. ² God approved of the men of old because of their faith.
