²⁷ The boys grew up. Esau became a skilled hunter, a man who loved the outdoors. Jacob was an upright man who stayed at home.

⁷ For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together, and the land where they were strangers could not support them because of their livestock.

¹² »Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land Jehovah your God gives you.

⁹ »Never drink beer or wine when you or your sons enter the sacred tent. If you do, you will die right there! This is a long lasting law from generation to generation.

⁴² »‘Live in booths for seven days. Everyone born in Israel must live in booths. ⁴³ »‘This is how generations to come may learn how I made the people of Israel live in booths when I brought them out of Egypt. I am Jehovah your God!’«

² »Tell the Israelites: ‘A man or a woman may make a special vow to live as a Nazirite dedicated to Jehovah. ³ »‘Nazirites must never drink wine, liquor, vinegar made from wine or liquor, or any kind of grape juice. They must never eat fresh grapes or raisins. ⁴ »‘As long as they are Nazirites they must never eat anything that comes from a grapevine, not even grape seeds or skins. ⁵ »‘As long as they are under the Nazirite vow no razor may touch their heads. During the entire time that they are dedicated to Jehovah as Nazirites, they will be holy. They must let their hair grow long.

⁷ »He told me I would become pregnant and have a son. He told me: ‘Do not drink any wine or beer, or eat any forbidden food. This is because the boy is to be dedicated to God as a Nazirite as long as he lives.’«

¹⁴ »She must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine. She must not drink any wine or beer, or eat any forbidden food. She must do everything I told her to do.«

¹⁵ When he left there he met Jehonadab, the son of Rechab. He greeted him and said to him: »Is your heart true to mine, as mine is to yours?« Jehonadab in answer said: »It is.« Jehu said: »If it is give me your hand.« He gave him his hand and he made him come up into his chariot.

²³ Jehu, with Jehonadab, the son of Rechab, went into the house of Baal. He said to the servants of Baal: »Make a search with care, to see that no servant of Jehovah is with you, but only servants of Baal.«

⁵⁵ and the clans of scribes who lived at Jabez: the Tirathites, Shimeathites and Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Recab. Ram was the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, the leader of the people of Judah.

¹⁹ While they were few in number a small group of foreigners lived in that land.

¹⁴ They saw that it was recorded in the law that Jehovah gave orders by Moses, that the children of Israel were to have tents for their living-places in the feast of the seventh month: ¹⁵ They were to give an order, and make it public in all their towns and in Jerusalem, saying: Go out to the mountain and get olive branches and branches of field olives (oil trees) and of myrtle, and palm branches and branches of thick trees, to make tents, as it says in the book. ¹⁶ The people went out and got them and made themselves tents. Every one on the roof of his house, and in the open spaces and in the open squares of the House of God, and in the wide place of the Water Gate, and the wide place of the Gate of Ephraim.

¹² They were a few men in number, very few, and strangers in it.

¹⁰ »We live in tents, and we have obeyed everything our ancestor Jonadab ordered us to do.

¹⁵ »He will be great in the eyes of God. He will not drink wine or strong drink and he will be full of Holy Spirit from the time of his birth.

²⁶ Because of the present distress I think it is good for you to remain as you are. ²⁷ Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek a release. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife. ²⁸ If you marry you have not sinned. If a virgin marries she has not sinned. Those who marry will face many problems in this life and I want to spare you. ²⁹ I will say this brothers the time remaining is short. So from now on those who have wives should be like those who have none. ³⁰ Those who weep should be like those who do not weep. And those who rejoice should be like those who do not rejoice, and those who buy like those who do not possess. ³¹ Those who use this world should not abuse it, for the fashion of this world is passing away.

² Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise. ³ Then it will go well with you, and you may live long on the earth.

⁹ By faith he became an alien in the Promised Land. It was not his land. He lived in tents with Isaac and Jacob. They were heirs with him of the same promise. ¹⁰ He looked for the city having real foundations, whose builder and maker is God. ¹¹ By faith Sarah received strength to conceive seed when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who promised. ¹² This was to come from one man and him as good as dead. There were born children, as many as the stars of heaven in multitude, and as uncountable as the sand by the seashore. ¹³ These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and greeted them from afar. They confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

¹¹ Beloved, I request that you as aliens and strangers abstain from fleshly lust (desires), which causes conflict in you.
