Let us not hurt him, because he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.« His brothers agreed. 28 Some of the Midianite traders approached. The brothers pulled Joseph out of the well and sold him for twenty pieces of silver to the Ishmaelites. They took him to Egypt.

Genesis 42:21-22

21 They said to one another: »Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw his distress when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen. Therefore this distress has come upon us.« 22 Reuben said: »Did I not tell you? Did I say, ‘Do not sin against the boy’? You would not listen! Now comes the reckoning for his blood.«
