²⁵ Moses cried out to Jehovah. Jehovah showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. Jehovah presented laws and rules for them to live by. He tested them there.

¹⁰ The Israelites saw the king coming with his army. They were frightened and begged Jehovah for help.

⁴ Jehovah said to Moses: »I am going to cause food to rain down from the sky for all of you. The people must go out every day and gather enough for that day. In this way I can test them to find out if they will follow my instructions.

⁴ Moses cried out to Jehovah: »What should I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me!«

² »Remember the forty years Jehovah your God led you in the wilderness. He did this in order to humble you and test you. He wanted to know what was in your heart. Whether you would obey his commandments.

¹⁶ »He fed you in the desert with manna. Your fathers had never seen this. He did this in order to humble you and test you. But he also did this so that things would go well for you in the end.

³ do not listen to them. Jehovah your God is allowing them to test you. He will then know that you love Jehovah with all your heart.

²¹ The people said to Joshua: »No! We will serve Jehovah!« ²² Joshua replied: »You are your own witnesses to the fact that you have chosen to serve Jehovah.« They said: »We are witnesses!« ²³ »Remove the foreign gods you have.« He demanded: »Pledge your loyalty to Jehovah, the God of Israel.« ²⁴ The people said to Joshua: »We will serve Jehovah our God. We will obey his commands.« ²⁵ Joshua made a covenant for the people that day at Shechem. He gave them laws and rules to follow.

²² »That through them I may test Israel, to see whether they will keep the way of Jehovah and walk in it as their fathers did.«

¹ Now these are the nations that Jehovah left to test the Israelites who had not known all the wars of Canaan.

⁴ They were to be a test for Israel. This would find out whether or not the Israelites would obey the commandments that Jehovah gave their ancestors through Moses.

²¹ and he went to the spring, threw the salt in the water, and said: »This is what Jehovah says: ‘I make this water pure. It will not cause any more deaths or miscarriages.’«

⁴¹ Elisha asked for some meal. He threw it into the pot and said: »Pour out some more stew for them.« Then there was nothing wrong with it.

¹⁰ You have tested us, O God. You have refined us in the same way silver is refined.

¹⁵ When you call to me, I will answer you. I will be with you when you are in trouble. I will deliver you and honor you.

⁶ Moses and Aaron were among his priests. Samuel was among those who called on his name. They called upon Jehovah and he answered them.

³ The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold but Jehovah proves the heart.

⁷ Thus says Jehovah of Hosts: »Behold, I will refine them and assay them. What else can I do, because of the daughter of my people?

¹ Jehovah said to me: »I would not feel sorry for these people, even if Moses and Samuel were standing in front of me. Send them away from my presence, and let them go.

¹⁸ For the preaching of the stake is foolishness to those who perish. It is the power of God to us who are saved.

⁶ You greatly rejoice in this, though you have been grieved with various trials for a little while. ⁷ The proof of your faith is more precious than gold that perishes. Though it is tested by fire, it may be found in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
