⁴ »When Jehovah your God expels these people right before your very eyes, do not say to yourselves: ‘Jehovah brought us here to possess this land because we live right (are righteous).’ This is not the case. It is because these nations are so wicked that Jehovah is forcing them out of your way.

¹⁶ »They shall come back here in the fourth generation. The iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.«

²⁴ »‘Do not become unclean in any of these ways. By these practices all the nations that I am forcing out of your way have become unclean. ²⁵ »‘The land has become unclean. I will punish it for its sins. The land will vomit out those who live in it. ²⁶ »‘Live by my standards, and obey my rules. Neither you nor any foreigner should ever do any of these disgusting things. ²⁷ »‘The people of the land who were there before you did all these disgusting things. As a result, the land has become unclean. ²⁸ »‘If you make the land unclean, it will vomit you out as it has vomited out the people who were there before you. ²⁹ »‘Whoever does any of these disgusting things must be excluded from the people. ³⁰ »‘Therefore you must follow my instructions. Do not live by the standards of the people who lived there before you. What they do is disgusting. Never become unclean that way. I am Jehovah your God!’«

⁷ »Jehovah set his heart on you. He chose you, even though you did not outnumber all the other people. You were the smallest of all nations. ⁸ »You were chosen because Jehovah loved you and kept the oath he swore to your fathers. So he used his mighty hand to bring you out. He freed you from slavery under Pharaoh king of Egypt.

¹⁷ »When you succeed do not brag: ‘I am rich. I earned it all myself.’«

⁵ »It is not because you have been living right or because you are so honest that you enter to take possession of their land. It is because these people are so wicked that Jehovah your God is forcing them out of your way. It is also because Jehovah wants to confirm the promise he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

³¹ »Do not behave this way toward Jehovah your God, for every abominable act Jehovah hates they have done for their gods. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.

⁹ »When you come into the land that Jehovah your God gives you, do not follow the disgusting practices of the nations that are there. ¹⁰ »Do not sacrifice your children in the fires on your altars. Do not let your people practice divination or look for omens or use spells or charms. ¹¹ »Do not allow them to consult the spirits of the dead. ¹² »Jehovah your God hates people who do these disgusting things. That is why he is driving those nations out of the land as you advance. ¹³ »Be perfect (without blemish) with Jehovah your God. ¹⁴ »These nations whom you shall possess listened to observers of clouds and to diviners. As for you, Jehovah your God has not allowed you to do so.

²² »So tell the people of Israel, ‘the Lord Jehovah says: »I am about to do something, people of Israel. I will not do this for your sake but for the sake of my holy name, which you have dishonored among the nations wherever you have gone.«’

³² »‘I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake,’ proclaims the Lord Jehovah. ‘Be ashamed and disgraced because of your ways, people of Israel.’

⁶ If it is by grace then it is no longer on the basis of works. Otherwise grace is not grace (undeserved kindness). But if it is of works then it is not by grace. Otherwise works are no longer works.

²⁰ They were broken off because of unbelief! You stand by faith! Do not be conceited but be reverent.

⁴ I know nothing against myself. Yet this does not acquit me, but he that judges me is God.

⁷ For who made you superior to (different than) another? What do you have that you did not receive? If you did receive it, why do you brag, as if you did not receive it?

⁴ But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, ⁵ even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. For by grace (loving-kindness) you have been saved.

⁹ God has saved us and called us with a holy calling. This is not according to our works, but according to his purpose and grace that was granted us in Christ Jesus, from all eternity.

³ For we also once were foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. ⁴ When the kindness of God our Savior, and his love toward man, appeared, ⁵ not by works done in righteousness, which we did, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the washing of regeneration (restoration) (spiritual rebirth) and renewing (renovation) of the Holy Spirit.
