1 Jehovah said to Samuel: »How long will you mourn for Saul? After all I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Take oil in your vessel and go. I will send you to Jesse, the Beth-lehemite. I have a king from among his sons.«

1 Samuel 16:11-13

11 »Are these all the sons you have?« Samuel asked. »There is still the youngest one,« Jesse answered. »He is tending sheep.« Samuel responded: »Send someone to get him. We will not continue until he gets here.« 12 Jesse sent for him. He was a handsome, healthy young man, and his eyes sparkled. Jehovah said to Samuel: »This is the one. Anoint him!« 13 Samuel took the olive oil and anointed David in front of his brothers. Immediately the Spirit of Jehovah took control of David and was with him from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

2 Samuel 6:21

21 David answered: »I danced to honor Jehovah. He chose me to be king instead of your father and his family. He made me the leader of his people Israel. I will continue to dance and honor Jehovah.

2 Samuel 7:1-5

1 King David was settled in his palace. Jehovah kept him safe from all his enemies. 2 The king said to the prophet Nathan: »I live in a house built of cedar. Yet the Ark of God is kept in a tent!« 3 Nathan answered: »Do what you have in mind. Jehovah is with you.« 4 That night Jehovah said to Nathan, 5 »Go tell my servant David that I say to him: ‘You are not the one to build a temple for me to live in.

2 Samuel 7:8-16

8 »Say this to my servant David: ‘This is what Jehovah of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture where you followed sheep so that you could be the leader of my people Israel. 9 »‘I was with you wherever you went. I destroyed all your enemies in front of you. I will make your name famous like the names of the greatest people on earth. 10 »‘I will make a place for my people Israel and plant them there. They will dwell in their own place and not be troubled anymore. The wicked will not oppress them as they used to do 11 when I let judges rule my people. I have kept your enemies from attacking you. Now I promise that you and your descendants will be kings. 12 »‘I will choose one of your sons to be king when you reach the end of your life and are buried in the tomb of your ancestors. I will make him a strong ruler. 13 »‘I will allow no one to take his long lasting kingdom away from him. He will be the one to build a temple for me. 14 »‘I will be his father. He will be my son. When he does wrong I will correct him just as parents correct children. 15 »‘I will never put an end to my agreement with him. I put an end to my agreement with Saul when he was king before you. 16 »‘I will make sure that one of your descendants will be king for a very long time. Your throne will be established from generation to generation.’«

2 Samuel 7:18-19

18 David went into the tent he set up for the ark. Then he sat there and prayed: »Jehovah All-Powerful, my family and I do not deserve what you have already done for us. 19 »Yet this was insignificant in your eyes, O Sovereign Lord Jehovah for you have spoken also of your servant’s house in the distant future. And this is the law for man, O Sovereign Lord Jehovah.

17 Solomon continued: »My father David planned to build a temple for the worship of Jehovah the God of Israel, 18 »‘Jehovah said to him: ‘You were right in wanting to build a temple for me. 19 »‘However you will never build it. It is your son who will build my temple.’«

This Temple will be a stool for our God’s feet, and I have made preparations to build it.« 3 »However God told me: ‘You must not build the Temple for my name because you have fought wars and caused bloodshed.’« 4 »Yet, from my entire family Jehovah God of Israel chose me to be king of Israel for as long as I live. He had chosen the tribe of Judah to lead Israel. From the families of Judah he chose my father’s family. From among my father’s sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel. 5 »Of all my sons, for Jehovah has given me many sons, he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of Jehovah’s kingdom to rule Israel.

1 Chronicles 29:2-3

2 »I have made every effort to prepare materials for the Temple: gold, silver, bronze, iron, timber, precious stones and gems, stones for mosaics, and quantities of marble. 3 »Over and above all this that I have provided, I have given silver and gold from my personal property because of my love for God’s Temple.

Psalms 78:68-72

68 but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion he loved. 69 He built his holy place to be like the high heavens, like the earth that he made to last for a long time. 70 He chose his servant David. He took him from the sheep pens. 71 He brought him from tending the ewes that had lambs so that David could be the shepherd of the people of Jacob, of Israel, the people who belonged to Jehovah. 72 With unselfish devotion David became their shepherd. His throne will be in my presence like the sun. 37 It shall be established forever like the moon. It will be like a faithful witness in heaven.

Psalms 132:1-5

1 Jehovah, remember David and all his affliction. 2 Remember how he swore an oath to Jehovah and made this vow to the Mighty One of Jacob. 3 He said: »I will not step inside my house, 4 get into my bed, shut my eyes, or close my eyelids 5 until I find a place for Jehovah, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.«

Psalms 132:11

11 Jehovah swore an oath to David: »This is a truth he will not take back: I will set one of your own descendants on your throne.

Acts 13:22

22 »When he removed him, he made David their king. He testified about him when he said: I found David the son of Jesse is a man after my own heart. He will do my will.
