²² »How will you deceive him?« Jehovah asked. The spirit replied: »I will make all of Ahab's prophets tell lies.« Jehovah said: »Go and deceive him. You will succeed.«

²³ God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem. The men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

¹⁴ Jehovah’s Spirit left Saul, and a distressing spirit sent by Jehovah tormented him.

⁹ One night, David was in Saul’s home, playing the harp for him. Saul sat there with a spear in his hand. The distressing spirit from Jehovah took control of him.

¹⁰ The next day Jehovah let a distressing spirit take control of Saul. He began acting like a crazy man inside his house. David came to play the harp for Saul as usual. This time Saul had a spear in his hand.

²⁰ Jehovah asked: »Who will deceive Ahab so that he will go and be killed at Ramoth? Some of the angels said one thing, and others said something else,

⁸ »Did you notice my servant Job?« Jehovah asked. »There is no one on earth as faithful and good as he is. He respects me and is careful not to do anything evil.« ⁹ Satan replied: »Would Job respect you if he got nothing out of it? ¹⁰ »You have always protected him and his family and everything he owns. You bless everything he does. You have given him enough cattle to fill the whole country. ¹¹ »Now suppose you take away everything he has. He will curse you to your face!«

⁴ Satan answered Jehovah: »Skin for skin! Certainly, a man will give everything he has for his life. ⁵ »But stretch out your hand, and strike his flesh and bones and he will curse you to your face!« ⁶ Jehovah told Satan: »He is in your power, but you must spare his life!«

¹⁶ »To him belong strength and victory. Both deceived and deceivers are his.

¹⁷ He loved to put curses on others, so he, too, was cursed. He did not like to bless others, so he never received a blessing.

⁹ »‘If a prophet is tricked into giving a prophecy, it is I, Jehovah, who tricked the prophet. I will use my power against you and destroy you from among my people Israel.

⁴⁴ »You are from your father [Satan] the Devil (slanderer) (false accuser)! You want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning. He does not stand for the truth. There is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks his own lies. He is a liar and the father of the lie!

³ Peter said: »Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the money from the land sale? ⁴ While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your power? Why did you conceive this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.«

⁹ The evil (lawless) one will come with the power of Satan and perform all kinds of false signs and wonders. ¹⁰ He will use every kind of wicked deceit on those who will perish. They will perish because they did not welcome and love the truth so as to be saved. ¹¹ So God dispatches the power of deceit (error) to work in them so that they are allowed to believe what is false. ¹² Then everyone who did not believe the truth, but was delighted with wickedness, will be condemned.

¹ The Spirit explicitly says that some will fall away from the faith (truth) in later times. Spirits and doctrines of demons will seduce them,

⁶ We are from God. He who knows God listens to us. He who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the vital principle (spirit) of truth, and the principle (spirit) of deception (error).

⁹ The great dragon was thrown down, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, who deceives the whole world. He was hurled down to the earth, and his angels with him. ¹⁰ I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, »Now has come the salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power (authority) of his Christ: for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accused them before our God day and night.

¹⁴ And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles he had power to do in the sight of the beast. He says to those who dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast that had the wound by a sword and yet lives.

¹³ I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. ¹⁴ They are demonic spirits, working signs, which go to the kings of the earth, of the whole world. They gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

¹⁷ »For God put in their hearts the desire to carry out his purpose, and to agree, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

³ He hurled him into the bottomless pit, and shut it and sealed it over him. He could not deceive the nations anymore till the thousand years ended. After that he must be let loose for a little while.

⁷ When the thousand years end, Satan will be let loose out of his prison.

¹⁰ The devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are, and will be tormented day and night forever.
