⁵ you must not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and upon the children's children, on the third and on the fourth [generation] of those who hate me,

² Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, "Should you help the wicked, and love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, wrath is on you from before the LORD.

²³ Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then may you also do good, who are accustomed to do evil.

¹⁹ Therefore, whoever will break one of these least commandments, and teach others to do so, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever will do and teach them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

³⁴ You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify about it, that its works are evil.

²³ He who hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have had sin. But now have they seen and also hated both me and my Father.

²⁸ Even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God abandoned them to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not right;

³⁰ slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

³¹ Do we then nullify the law through faith? Absolutely not. No, we establish the law.

¹⁰ For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life.

⁷ What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not. However, I would not have known sin, except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness, unless the law had said, "Do not covet." ⁸ But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin is dead. ⁹ I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin became alive, and I died. ¹⁰ The commandment, which was for life, this I found to be for death; ¹¹ for sin, taking the opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me. ¹² Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good. ¹³ Did that which is good, then, become death to me? Absolutely not. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful. ¹⁴ For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin.

²² For I delight in God's law in my inner being,

⁴ so that the requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

¹⁴ Now the natural person does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

²¹ to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law.

²² But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³ gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

¹⁸ being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts; ¹⁹ who having become callous gave themselves up to lust, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

²¹ You, who once were alienated and were hostile in your minds, doing evil deeds,

⁴ traitors, headstrong, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God;

¹⁰ "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel. After those days," says the Lord; "I will put my laws into their mind, I will also write them on their heart. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

⁴ You adulterers and adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

¹⁴ having eyes full of adultery, and insatiable for sin, enticing unstable people, having a heart trained in greed. Children under a curse. ¹⁵ Do not love the world, neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not the Father's, but is the world's.
