¹ [For the Chief Musician. A contemplation by David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, "David has come to Abimelech's house."] Why do you boast of mischief, mighty man? God's loving kindness endures continually.

⁴ The Nephilim were on the earth in those days (and also after that), when the sons of God had sexual relations with the daughters of humankind and had children by them. They were the mighty men who were from ancient times, famous men. ⁵ And God saw that the wickedness of humankind was great on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

⁸ Cush became the father of Nimrod. He began to be a mighty one on the earth. ⁹ He was a mighty hunter before God. Therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before God."

⁹ For every matter of trespass, whether it be for ox, for donkey, for sheep, for clothing, or for any kind of lost thing, about which one says, 'This is mine,' the cause of both parties shall come before God. He whom God condemns shall pay double to his neighbor.

⁷ Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the best of the herdsmen who belonged to Saul.

⁹ Then Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, answered and said, "I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ He inquired of God for him, gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine." ¹¹ Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests who were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king. ¹² Saul said, "Hear now, you son of Ahitub." He answered, "Here I am, my lord." ¹³ Saul said to him, "Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?" ¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, "Who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and a commander over your bodyguard, and honored in your house? ¹⁵ Have I today begun to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me. Do not let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for your servant knows nothing of all this, less or more." ¹⁶ The king said, "You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you, and all your father's house." ¹⁷ The king said to the guard who stood about him, "Turn, and kill the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled, and did not disclose it to me." But the servants of the king wouldn't put forth their hand to fall on the priests of the LORD. ¹⁸ The king said to Doeg, "Turn and attack the priests." Doeg the Edomite turned, and he attacked the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five people who wore a linen ephod. ¹⁹ He struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and nursing babies, and cattle and donkeys and sheep.

¹⁴ Look, he travails with iniquity. Yes, he has conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

² In arrogance, the wicked hunt down the weak. They are caught in the schemes that they devise. ³ For the wicked boasts of his heart's cravings, and he blesses the greedy, scorning the LORD.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and bitterness and oppression. Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and to do good. ⁴ He plots iniquity on his bed. He sets himself in a way that is not good. He doesn't abhor evil. ⁵ Your loving kindness, LORD, is in the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. ⁶ Your righteousness is like the mountains of God. Your judgments are like a great deep. LORD, you preserve man and animal.

³ For strangers have risen up against me. Violent men have sought after my soul. They haven't set God before them. Selah.

⁷ Look, they spew with their mouth. Swords are in their lips, "For," they say, "who hears us?"

⁴ They pour out arrogant words. All the evildoers boast.

¹⁷ But the LORD's loving kindness is from everlasting to everlasting with those who fear him, his righteousness to children's children;

¹ Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

¹ By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yes, we wept, when we remembered Zion. ² On the willows in its midst, we hung up our harps.

¹⁴ in whose heart is perverseness, who devises evil continually, who always sows discord.

¹⁸ a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief,

⁴ None sues in righteousness, and none pleads in truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

⁸ Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceit: one speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he lies in wait for him.

³ Their hands are on that which is evil to do it diligently. The ruler and judge ask for a bribe; and the powerful man dictates the evil desire of his soul. Thus they conspire together.

³⁰ slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

² For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

⁷ Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God, and knows God. ⁸ He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
