²⁶ Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.

¹⁸ And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up as a standing-stone, and poured oil on top of it. ¹⁹ He called the name of that place Bethel, though previously the city was named Luz. ²⁰ Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and will watch over me on this journey I am taking, and will give me food to eat, and clothing to put on, ²¹ so that I return to my father's house safely, then the LORD will be my God, ²² and this stone, which I have set up as a standing-stone, will be God's house. Of all that you will give me I will surely give the tenth to you."

⁴ So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their possession, and the rings that were in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak that was near Shechem.

⁸ Now Deborah, Rebekahʼs nurse, died, and she was buried under an oak outside Bethel. So he called its name Allon Bakuth.

³ and command them, saying, 'Take up for yourselves from here, from the middle of the Jordan from the place where the feet of the priests stood firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging place, where you will lodge tonight.'" ⁴ Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man. ⁵ Joshua said to them, "Pass over before me in the presence of the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you pick up a stone and put it on your shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; ⁶ that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask in time to come, saying, 'What do you mean by these stones?' ⁷ then you shall tell them, 'Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.'" ⁸ The children of Israel did as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan, as the LORD spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. ⁹ Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day.

²⁰ Joshua set up those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, in Gilgal. ²¹ He spoke to the children of Israel, saying, "When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, 'What do these stones mean?' ²² Then you shall let your children know, saying, 'Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. ²³ For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until you had passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Sea at the End, which he dried up from before us, until we had passed over; ²⁴ that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty; that you may fear the LORD your God forever.'"

⁶ And all the lords of Shechem assembled themselves together, and all Beth Millo, and went and made Abimelech king by the oak which is found at the pillar in Shechem.
