¹⁰ He has broken me down on every side, and I am gone. My hope he has plucked up like a tree.

¹³ Now the day came when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house, ¹⁴ that there came a messenger to Job, and said, "The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys grazing beside them, ¹⁵ and Sheba attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." ¹⁶ While he was still speaking, there also came another, and said, "The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the young men, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you." ¹⁷ While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "The Kasdim made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, and killed the young men with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you." ¹⁸ While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house, ¹⁹ and look, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you."

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.

¹³ So are the paths of all who forget God. The hope of the godless man shall perish, ¹⁴ Whose confidence shall break apart, Whose trust is a spider's web. ¹⁵ He shall lean on his house, but it shall not stand. He shall cling to it, but it shall not endure. ¹⁶ He is green before the sun. His shoots go forth over his garden. ¹⁷ His roots are wrapped around the rock pile. He sees the place of stones. ¹⁸ If he is destroyed from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, 'I have not seen you.'

¹⁴ Look, he breaks down, and it can't be built again. He imprisons a man, and there can be no release.

¹¹ My days are past, my plans are broken off, as are the thoughts of my heart.

¹⁵ where then is my hope? As for my hope, who shall see it?

²⁰ The womb shall forget him. The worm shall feed sweetly on him. He shall be no more remembered. Unrighteousness shall be broken as a tree.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked wielding great power, and towering like a cedar of Lebanon. ³⁶ And I passed by, and look, he was not. And I looked for him, but he could not be found.

¹³ But to you, LORD, I have cried. In the morning, my prayer comes before you. ¹⁴ LORD, why do you reject my soul? Why do you hide your face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors, I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your fierce wrath has gone over me. Your terrors have cut me off. ¹⁷ They came around me like water all day long. They completely engulfed me. ¹⁸ You have put lover and friend far from me, and my friends into darkness.

¹¹ My days are like a long shadow. I have withered like grass.

⁵ The LORD has become as an enemy; he has swallowed up Israel; he has swallowed up all her palaces and has destroyed its strongholds. He has multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation. ⁶ He has done violence to his temple, as if it were a vineyard; he has destroyed his place of assembly. The LORD has caused solemn assembly and Sabbath to be forgotten in Zion, and he has spurned in his fierce anger king and priest and prince.

⁸ We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair; ⁹ pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed;
