⁴ By faith, Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he was attested as righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and though he died he still speaks through it.

³ As time passed, it happened that Cain brought an offering to God from the fruit of the ground. ⁴ And Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. And God looked favorably on Abel and his offering, ⁵ but he did not look favorably on Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.

⁸ Cain said to Abel, his brother, "Let's go into the field." It happened when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.

¹⁰ And God said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.

¹⁵ The LORD said to him, "Not so. Whoever kills Cain vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold." The LORD appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should strike him.

²⁵ Adam had marital relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, "For God has appointed me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him."

²⁴ There came forth fire from before the LORD, and consumed the burnt offering and the fat upon the altar: and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

³⁸ Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

⁸ The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination: how much more, when he brings it with a wicked mind.

³⁵ that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.

⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.' Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.

¹⁶ They profess that they know God, but by their works they deny him, being abominable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.

²² According to the Law, nearly everything is cleansed with blood, and apart from shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

¹ Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

²⁴ to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better than that of Abel.

¹¹ For this is the message which you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another; ¹² unlike Cain, who was of the evil one, and killed his brother. Why did he kill him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

¹¹ Woe to them. For they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in Korah's rebellion.
