Then David arose, and cut off an edge of Saul's robe secretly. ⁵ It happened afterward, that David's heart struck him, because he had cut off an edge of Saul's robe. ⁶ He said to his men, "The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD's anointed, to put forth my hand against him, since he is the LORD's anointed." ⁷ So David restrained his men with these words and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

⁹ David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless?" ¹⁰ David said, "As the LORD lives, the LORD will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish. ¹¹ The LORD forbid that I should put forth my hand against the LORD's anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head, and the jar of water, and let us go."

And he has not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in my eyes, and to keep my statutes and my ordinances, as David his father did. ³⁴ "'However I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand; but I will make him prince all the days of his life, for David my servant's sake whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes; ³⁵ but I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it to you, even ten tribes. ³⁶ To his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a lamp always before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there. ³⁷ I will take you, and you shall reign according to all that your soul desires, and shall be king over Israel.

⁴ He plots iniquity on his bed. He sets himself in a way that is not good. He doesn't abhor evil.

¹ Woe to you who destroy, but you weren't destroyed; and who betray, but nobody betrayed you. When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed; and when you have made an end of betrayal, you will be betrayed.

¹ Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds. When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.
