³² Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she named him Reuben. For she said, "Because God has looked at my affliction, and given me a son. For now my husband will love me." ³³ She conceived again, and bore a son, and said, "Because God has heard that I am unloved, he has therefore given me this son also." So she named him Simeon. ³⁴ She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, "Now this time my husband will become attached to me, since I have given him three sons." Therefore he was named Levi. ³⁵ She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, "This time will I praise the LORD." Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.

⁵ Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son. ⁶ Rachel said, "God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son." Therefore she called his name Dan. ⁷ Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son. ⁸ Rachel said, "I have wrestled mightily with my sister, and have prevailed." So she named him Naphtali. ⁹ When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah, her servant, and gave her to Jacob as a wife. ¹⁰ Zilpah, Leah's handmaid, bore Jacob a son. ¹¹ Leah said, "How fortunate." So she named him Gad. ¹² Zilpah, Leah's servant, bore Jacob a second son. ¹³ Leah said, "Happy am I, for the daughters will call me happy." So she named him Asher. ¹⁴ Reuben went out during the wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother, Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your sonʼs mandrakes." ¹⁵ She said to her, "Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my sonʼs mandrakes, also?" Rachel said, "Therefore he may sleep with you tonight for your sonʼs mandrakes." ¹⁶ Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, "You must sleep with me; for I have surely hired you with my sonʼs mandrakes." So he slept with her that night. ¹⁷ God listened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son. ¹⁸ Leah said, "God has given me my wages, because I gave my servant to my husband." So she named him Issachar. ¹⁹ Leah conceived again, and bore a sixth son to Jacob. ²⁰ Leah said, "God has given me with a good gift. Now my husband will live with me, because I have borne him six sons." So she named him Zebulun. ²¹ Afterwards, she bore a daughter, and named her Dinah. ²² God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her, and made her fertile. ²³ She conceived, bore a son, and said, "God has taken away my shame." ²⁴ So she named him Joseph, saying, “May God add another son to me."

²⁸ Then he said, "Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed."

¹⁸ It happened, as her life was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-Oni, but his father named him Benjamin.

²² It happened, while Israel lived in that land, that Reuben went and slept with Bilhah, his fatherʼs secondary wife, and Israel heard about it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve. ²³ The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacobʼs firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun. ²⁴ The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁵ And the sons of Bilhah, Rachelʼs servant: Dan and Naphtali. ²⁶ And the sons of Zilpah, Leahʼs servant: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan Aram.

⁸ Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacobʼs firstborn. ⁹ And the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, and Pallu, and Hezron, and Carmi. ¹⁰ And the sons of Simeon: Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jakin, and Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. ¹¹ And the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ¹² And the sons of Judah: Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamuel. ¹³ And the sons of Issachar: Tola, and Puah, and Jashub, and Shimron. ¹⁴ And the sons of Zebulun: Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel. ¹⁵ These are the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram, as well as his daughter Dinah. All the persons of his sons and his daughters were thirty-three. ¹⁶ And the sons of Gad: Zephon, and Haggi, and Shuni, and Ezbon, and Eri, and Arodi, and Areli. ¹⁷ And the sons of Asher: Jimnah, and Jishvah, and Jishvi, and Beriah, and Serah their sister. And the sons of Beriah: Heber, and Malkiel. ¹⁸ These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah, and these she bore to Jacob, sixteen persons. ¹⁹ The sons of Rachel, Jacobʼs wife: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁰ To Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him. ²¹ And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, and Beker, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, and Ahiram, and Shuppim, and Huppim, and Ard. ²² These are the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob: all the persons were fourteen. ²³ And the sons of Dan: Shuham. ²⁴ And the sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem. ²⁵ These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel; and these she bore to Jacob: all the persons were seven. ²⁶ All the persons who came with Jacob into Egypt, who were his direct descendants, not including the wives of Jacob's sons, all the persons were sixty-six. ²⁷ And the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt were two persons. All the persons of the house of Jacob who came into Egypt were seventy.

² Assemble yourselves and hear, you sons of Jacob. Listen to Israel, your father.

⁴ Uncontrolled as the waters, you will not have excel, because you went up to your father's bed, you went up and defiled my couch. ⁵ Simeon and Levi are brothers. Their swords are weapons of violence. ⁶ May I never enter their council. May my honor never be joined with their assembly. For in their anger they killed men, and for pleasure they hamstrung oxen. ⁷ Cursed be their anger, for it has been fierce, and their fury, for it was cruel. I will divide them in Jacob,and scatter them in Israel. ⁸ Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies. Your fatherʼs sons will bow down before you. ⁹ Judah is a lionʼs cub. From the prey, my son, you rise up. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, as a lioness. Who will rouse him up? ¹⁰ The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the rulerʼs staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. And it is he whom the peoples will obey. ¹¹ Binding his foal to the vine, and his donkeyʼs colt to the choice vine. He will wash his garments in wine, and his robes in the blood of grapes. ¹² His eyes will be darker than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk. ¹³ Zebulun will dwell at the seashore, and he will be a harbor for ships, and his border will be at Sidon. ¹⁴ Issachar is a strong donkey lying down between the saddlebags. ¹⁵ When he sees a good resting place, that the land is pleasant, he will bend his back to the burden, and become a slave doing forced labor. ¹⁶ Dan will judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel. ¹⁷ Dan will be a serpent on the road, a viper by the path, that bites the horseʼs heels so that his rider falls backward. ¹⁸ I wait for your salvation, God. ¹⁹ Gad will be attacked by raiders, but he will raid at their heels. ²⁰ Asherʼs food will be rich, and he will provide royal delicacies. ²¹ Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns. ²² Joseph is a fruitful son, a fruitful son by a spring. His branches run over a wall. ²³ The archers will attack him with bitterness, and shoot at him, and harass him. ²⁴ Yet his bow will remain steady, and his arms will be made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, by the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, ²⁵ by the God of your father, who will help you, and El Shaddai, who will bless you with blessings of the sky above, blessings of the deep that lies below, and blessings of the breasts and of the womb. ²⁶ The blessings of your father are greater than the blessings of the ancient mountains, and the bounty of the everlasting hills. They will be on the head of Joseph, and on the brow of the prince among his brothers. ²⁷ Benjamin is a ravenous wolf. In the morning he will devour the prey, and at evening he will divide the plunder." ²⁸ All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them. He blessed each one with his own individual blessing.

² Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, ³ Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, ⁴ Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. ⁵ These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: Of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur. ⁶ Of Simeon: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. ⁷ Of Judah: Nahshon the son of Amminadab. ⁸ Of Issachar: Nethanel the son of Zuar. ⁹ Of Zebulun: Eliab the son of Helon. ¹⁰ Of the sons Joseph: Of Ephraim: Elishama the son of Ammihud. Of Manasseh: Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. ¹¹ Of Benjamin: Abidan the son of Gideoni. ¹² Of Dan: Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. ¹³ Of Asher: Pagiel the son of Ochran. ¹⁴ Of Gad: Eliasaph the son of Reuel. ¹⁵ Of Naphtali: Ahira the son of Enan."

⁴ These were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zakkur. ⁵ Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori. ⁶ Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁷ Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. ⁸ Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. ⁹ Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. ¹⁰ Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi. ¹¹ Of the tribe of Joseph, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi. ¹² Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli. ¹³ Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. ¹⁴ Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. ¹⁵ Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Maki.

⁵ Reuben, the firstborn of Israel; the descendants of Reuben: of Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites; ⁶ of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites. ⁷ These are the families of the Reubenites; and those who were numbered of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred thirty. ⁸ The sons of Pallu: Eliab. ⁹ The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram. These are that Dathan and Abiram, who were called of the congregation, who strove against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Korah, when they strove against the LORD, ¹⁰ and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died; what time the fire devoured two hundred fifty men, and they became a sign. ¹¹ Notwithstanding, the sons of Korah did not die. ¹² The descendants of Simeon after their families: of Jemuel, the family of the Jemuelites; of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites; of Jakin, the family of the Jakinites; ¹³ of Zohar, the family of the Zoharites; of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites. ¹⁴ These are the families of the Simeonites, twenty-two thousand two hundred. ¹⁵ The descendants of Gad after their families: of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the family of the Haggites; of Shuni, the family of the Shunites; ¹⁶ of Ezbon, the family of the Ezbonites; of Eri, the family of the Erites; ¹⁷ of Arodi, the family of the Arodites; of Areli, the family of the Arelites. ¹⁸ These are the families of the sons of Gad according to those who were numbered of them, forty thousand and five hundred. ¹⁹ The sons of Judah: Er and Onan; and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. ²⁰ The descendants of Judah after their families were: of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites; of Perez, the family of the Perezites; of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites. ²¹ The sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Hamuel, the family of the Hamuelites. ²² These are the families of Judah according to those who were numbered of them, seventy-six thousand five hundred. ²³ The descendants of Issachar after their families: of Tola, the family of the Tolaites; of Puah, the family of the Puites; ²⁴ of Jashub, the family of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the family of the Shimronites. ²⁵ These are the families of Issachar according to those who were numbered of them, sixty-four thousand three hundred. ²⁶ The descendants of Zebulun after their families: of Sered, the family of the Seredites; of Elon, the family of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites. ²⁷ These are the families of the Zebulunites according to those who were numbered of them, sixty thousand five hundred. ²⁸ The sons of Joseph after their families: Manasseh and Ephraim. ²⁹ The descendants of Manasseh: of Makir, the family of the Makirites; and Makir became the father of Gilead; of Gilead, the family of the Gileadites. ³⁰ These are the descendants of Gilead: of Abiezer, the family of the Abiezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites; ³¹ and Asriel, the family of the Asrielites; and Shechem, the family of the Shechemites; ³² and Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites; and Hepher, the family of the Hepherites. ³³ Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters; and these are the names of the daughters of Zelophehad: Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. ³⁴ These are the families of Manasseh; and those who were numbered of them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred. ³⁵ These are the descendants of Ephraim after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; of Beker, the family of the Bekerites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites. ³⁶ These are the descendants of Shuthelah: of Eden, the family of the Edenites. ³⁷ These are the families of the descendants of Ephraim according to those who were numbered of them, thirty-two thousand five hundred. These are the descendants of Joseph after their families. ³⁸ The descendants of Benjamin after their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites; ³⁹ of Shuppim, the family of the Shuppimites; of Huppim, the family of the Huppimites. ⁴⁰ The sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the family of the Ardites; of Naaman, the family of the Naamanites. ⁴¹ These are the descendants of Benjamin after their families; and those who were numbered of them were forty-five thousand six hundred. ⁴² These are the descendants of Dan after their families: of Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These are the families of Dan after their families. ⁴³ All the families of the Shuhamites, according to those who were numbered of them, were sixty-four thousand four hundred. ⁴⁴ The descendants of Asher after their families: of Imnah, the family of the Jimnaites; of Jishvi, the family of the Jishvites; of Beriah, the family of the Berites. ⁴⁵ Of the descendants of Beriah: of Heber, the family of the Heberites; of Malkiel, the family of the Malkielites. ⁴⁶ The name of the daughter of Asher was Serah. ⁴⁷ These are the families of the descendants of Asher according to those who were numbered of them, fifty-three thousand and four hundred. ⁴⁸ The descendants of Naphtali after their families: of Jahzeel, the family of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the family of the Gunites; ⁴⁹ of Jezer, the family of the Jezerites; of Shillem, the family of the Shillemites. ⁵⁰ These are the families of Naphtali according to their families; and those who were numbered of them were forty-five thousand four hundred. ⁵¹ These are those who were numbered of the children of Israel, six hundred one thousand seven hundred thirty. ⁵² The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ⁵³ "To these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names. ⁵⁴ To the more you shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer you shall give the less inheritance: to everyone according to those who were numbered of him shall his inheritance be given. ⁵⁵ Notwithstanding, the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. ⁵⁶ According to the lot shall their inheritance be divided between the more and the fewer." ⁵⁷ These are those who were numbered of the Levites after their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites. ⁵⁸ These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korahites. Kohath became the father of Amram. ⁵⁹ The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt: and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister. ⁶⁰ To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. ⁶¹ Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered strange fire before the LORD. ⁶² Those who were numbered of them were twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel. ⁶³ These are those who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. ⁶⁴ But among these there was not a man of them who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. ⁶⁵ For the LORD had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. There was not left a man of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

⁵ of the tribe of Judah were sealed twelve thousand, of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand, ⁶ of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand, ⁷ of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand, of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand, ⁸ of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.
