² the Lorde hath ben sore dyspleased at youre forefathers.

¹⁶ thus sayth the Lorde: beholde I wyll brynge euyll vpon this place, and on the dwellers therin: euen al the wordes of the boke, whiche the King of Iuda hath read, ¹⁷ because they haue forsaken me, and haue burntofferynges vnto other Goddes, to angre me with all the workes of their handes. Therfore is my wrath kendled agaynst thys place, and shall not be quenched.

¹⁹ Because thyne hert dyd melt, and thou mekedest thy selfe before me the Lorde, when thou heardest what I spake agaynst thys place, and the enhabiters of the same, howe that it shoulde be destroyed and made acursed, and tarest thy clothes and weptest before me: of that also I haue hearde sayth the Lorde.

²⁶ Notwithstandynge the Lorde turned not from his fearce and great wrath, wherwyth he was angrye against Iuda vpon al the prouocacyons that Manasseh prouoked hym.

¹³ And therto he rebelled agaynst Nabuchodonozor which had receyued on othe of hym by God, & was to styfenecked & to harde herted to turne vnto the Lord God of Israel. ¹⁴ Therto all the rulers of the preastes with the people trespaced a pace after all maner of abhomynacyons of the hethen & poluted the house of the Lorde which he had halowed in Ierusalem. ¹⁵ And the Lord God of theyr fathers sent to them by his messengers, sendynge them be tymes: for he had compassyon on hys people & on his dwellynge place. ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God & despised theyr wordes & mysse vsed his prophetes, vntyll the wrath of the Lord so arose agaynst hys people that it was past remeadie. ¹⁷ And so he brought vpon them the kyng of Caldeye & slue theyr young men with the swerde in theyr holy temple, & nether spared younge man nor mayden, nether olde man, nether so moche as hym that stowped for age: But gaue all into his hande. ¹⁸ And all the vessels of the house of God bothe great and smalle, & the treasures of the house of God, & the treasures of the kynge & hys Lordes he caryed to Babilon euery with. ¹⁹ And they burnt the house of God and brake downe the walles of Ierusalem, and burnt all the palaces therof with fyre with all the goodly stoffe therof, and marred it. ²⁰ And he caryed awaye them that had escaped the swerde, to Babilon, where they were seruauntes to him and his chyldren, vntill the kyngdome of Persia beganne to rule,

⁶ and sayde. My God I am ashamed, and darre not lyfte vp myne eyes vnto the my God: for our wyckednesses are growne ouer our heade, & oure trespaces are waxen greate vnto the heauen. ⁷ Sence the tyme of oure fathers haue we bene in greate trespace vnto this day, and because of oure wyckednesses haue we and oure kinges ben delyuered into the hand of the kynges of the nacyons, into the swerde, into captyuite, into spoyle, and into confusion of face as it is come to passe thys daye.

¹³ And after all thys that is come vpon vs (because of oure euyll deades & greate trespace) thou oure God hast spared oure wyckednesse, and hast geuen vs a delyueraunce as it is come to passe thys daye.

²⁶ Neuerthelesse they were disobedient, & rebelled against the, and caste thy lawe behynde their backes, and slewe thy Prophetes (which exhorted them so earnestlye, that they shulde conuerte vnto the) and dyd greate blasphemyes. ²⁷ Therfore gauest thou them ouer into the hande of theyr enemyes that vexed them. And in the tyme of theyr trouble they cried vnto the, and thou hardest them from heauen and thorowe thy greate mercye thou gaueste them sauyours, which helped them oute of the hande of theyr enemyes.

¹ To the chaunter, vpon the rose of wytnesse Michtam of Dauid, for too teache when he fought agaynst Syria of Mesopotania, & Syria of Zoba: and when Ioab turned backe, and slue .xij. thousand Edomytes. in the valley of Salt. O God, thou that hast cast vs out and scatered vs abroade, thou that hast bene so sore displeased at vs, comforte vs agayne.

⁵ Lorde, howe longe wylt thou be angrye? shall thy ielousy burne lyke fyre for euer? ⁶ Poure oute thyne indignacyon vpon the Heathen that knowe the not, and vpon the Kyngdomes that call not vpon thy name.

⁶ Wherfore myne indignacion and wrathe was kyndled, and it brente vp the cytyes of Iuda, the feldes with the stretes of Ierusalem, so that they were made waste and desolate as it is come to passe thys day.

¹² Lamed. O ye all that go fore by, beholde and se, yf there be eny sorow like vnto myne, wherwith the Lord hath troubled me, in the daye of his fearefull wrath. ¹³ Mem. From aboute hath he sent downe a fyre into my bones and chastened me: he hath layed a net for my fete, and throwen me wyde open: he hath made me desolate, so that I must euer be mournynge. ¹⁴ Nun. The yocke of my transgressyon is come at the last, with his hande hath he taken it vp, & put it aboute my neck. My strength is gone: the Lorde hath delyuered me in to those handes, wherout I can not quyte my selfe. ¹⁵ Samech. The Lorde hath destroyed all the mightie men, that were in me. He hath proclamed a feast, to slaughter all my best men. The Lord hath troden downe the daughter of Iuda, like as it were in wyne presse.

³ Gymel. In the wrath of his indygnacyon he hath broken all the horne of Israel: he hath withdrawen his ryght hande from the enemye: yee a flame of fyre is kyndled in Iacob, and hath consumed vp all rounde aboute. ⁴ Daleth. Ie hath bent hys bowe lyke an enemye, he hath fastened his ryght hande as an aduersarye: and euerye thynge that was pleasaunt to se, he hath smyten it downe. He hath poured out hys wrath lyke a fyre, into the tabernacle of the daughter of Syon. ⁵ He. The Lorde is become lyke as it were an enemye, he hath cast downe Israell & all hys places: yee all his stronge holdes hath he destroyed, & fylled the daughter of Iuda wyth moch sorow and heuynesse.

⁴² We haue bene dyssemblers, and haue offended, wylt thou therfore not be intreated? ⁴³ Samech. Thou hast couered vs in thy wrath, & persecuted vs, thou hast slayne vs wythout any fauoure. ⁴⁴ Thou hast hyd thy selfe in a cloude, that oure prayer shulde not go thorow. ⁴⁵ Thou hast made vs outcastes, and to be despysed amonge the Heathen.

⁷ Oure fathers (whiche now are gone) haue synned, & we must beare their wyckednesse.

³¹ Therfore will I pour out my cruel displeasure vpon them, and burne them in the fyre in my wrath: their owne wayes will I recompence vpon their heades sayeth the Lorde God.

¹¹ yea all Israel haue transgressed, & gone back from thy law, so that they haue not herckened vnto thy voyce. Wherfore the cursse & othe, that is written in the lawe of Moses the seruaunte of God (agaynst whom we haue offended) is poured vpon vs. ¹² And he hath perfourmed his wordes, whiche he spake against vs, and against oure iudges that iudged vs: to brynge vpon vs suche a greate plage, as neuer was vnder heauen, lyke as it is now come to passe in Ierusalem.

¹ Come together & gather you, O froward people, ² or the thing go forthe that is concluded, & or the tyme be passed awaye as the duste: or the fearefull wrath of the Lorde come vpon you, ³ yea or the daye of the Lordes sore dyspleasure come vpon you. Seke the Lorde all ye meke herted vpon earth, ye that worcke after hys iudgemente, seke ryghtuousnesse: seke lowlynesse, that ye maye be defended in the wrothfull daye of the Lorde.

³⁰ and saye: if we had bene in the dayes of our fathers, we woulde not haue bene parteners with them in the bloude of the Prophetes. ³¹ So then ye be witnesses to your selues, that ye are the chyldren of them whyche kylled the Prophetes. ³² Fulfil ye likewyse the measure of your fathers.

⁵² Whyche of the prophetes haue not your fathers persecuted? And they haue slayne them, which shewed before of the comminge of the iuste whom ye haue nowe betrayed and mordred.
