¹ In the tyme when the Iudges iudged, there felle a darth in the land. Wherfore a certayn man of Bethlehem Iuda went for to soiourne in the countrey of Moab wyth his wyfe and two sonnes. ² The name of the man was Elymelec, and his wyfe Noemi, and the names of his two sonnes were, Mahalon and Chilion and they were Ephraites, oute of Bethlehem Iuda. And when they came into the lande of Moab, they contynued there. ³ And Elemilec Noemies husbande dyed, and she remayned with her two sonnes, ⁴ which toke them wyues of the nacions of the Moabites: the ones name Orphah and the others Ruth. And when they had dwelleth there about a ten yere, ⁵ Mahalon and Chilion dyed also euen both two of them, so that the wyfe was lefte desolate of her two sonnes & of her husband therto. ⁶ Then she stode vp wt her doughters in lawe and returned from the countrey of Moab: for she had heard saye, beyng in the countrey of Moab, howe that the Lorde had visited his people and geuen them fode. ⁷ Wherfore she departed oute of the place where she was and her two doughters wyth her. And as they went by the waye returning vnto the land of Iuda, ⁸ Noemi sayd vnto her two doughters in lawe: go and returne eche of you vnto youre mothers house: the Lorde deale as kyndlye wyth you, as ye haue dealt wt the dead & with me. ⁹ And the Lord geue you, that you maye fynde reast ether of you in the house of her husband: & so she kyssed them. Then they cryed & wepte ¹⁰ & sayd vnto her: we wil go with the vnto thy folke. ¹¹ But Noemi said, turne again my doughters: for what cause would you go with me? thinke you that there be any more children in my bowelles, to be youre husbandes? ¹² Turne again my doughters & go: for I am to olde to haue an husband. Yf I sayde I haue hope, also yf I toke a man this night, ye and though I had alreadye borne sonnes? ¹³ would ye tary after them, tyl they were of age? or would ye for them so long refrayne from takynge of husbandes? Not so my doughters: for it greueth me much for youre sakes, that the hande of the Lord is gone out against me. ¹⁴ Therwyth they cryed and wepte agayne how be it Orphah kissed her mother in lawe but Ruth aboade still by her, ¹⁵ then she sayd: se, thy syster in lawe is gone backe againe vnto her people & vnto her God: returne thou after her. ¹⁶ But Ruth saide: entreate me not to leaue the, and to returne from after the, for whether thou goest, I will go, & where thou dwelleste, there I wil dwelle: thy people are my people, and thy God is my God. ¹⁷ Where thou dyest, I wil dye, and there wilbe buried. The Lorde do so and so to me, excepte that death onlye departe the and me a sondre. ¹⁸ When she saw that she woulde nedes go with her, she left speakinge vnto her. ¹⁹ And so they went both together vntyll they came to Bethlehem. And when they were come to Bethlehem, it was noysed thorow al the cyty and the wemen sayde: is not this Noemi? ²⁰ But she said vnto them, calle me not Noemi: call me Mara, for the almightye hath made me very bitter. ²¹ I went oute full: but the Lorde hath brought me home emptye. Why should ye then calle me Noemi: seyng the Lord hath humbled me, & the almighty hath brought me vnto aduersite? ²² And the time when Noemi wyth Ruth the Moabitesse her doughter in lawe returned out of the countreye of Moab and came to Bethlehem, was in the begynning of barley harueste

¹⁶ Goo therfore & gather the elders of Israell togyther, & say vnto them: the Lorde God of youre fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Iacob appeared vnto me, and sayed. I haue bene and sene both you and that which is done to you in Egypte.

³¹ & the people beleued. And when they hearde that the Lord had visited the children of Israell and had loked vpon their tribulation they bowed them selues and worshypped.

And they were sore vexed. ¹⁶ Neuerthelesse the Lord raysed vp Iudges which delyuered them oute of the handes of theyr oppressers, ¹⁷ and yet for al that they wold not harken vnto theyr iudges: But wente a whorynge after straunge Goddes & bowed them selues vnto them, and turned quicklye oute of the waye which theyr fathers walked in obeyinge the commaundementes of the Lord and dyd not so. ¹⁸ And when the Lorde raysed them vp Iudges, he was wyth the Iudge, and delyuered them out of the handes of theyr enemyes al the dayes of the Iudge: for the Lorde had compassyon ouer theyr sorowynges whiche they had by the reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them:

²⁴ Naye, but what people Camos thy God dryueth out, that land possesse thou. But whatsoeuer nacyons the Lorde oure God expelleth, that land ought we to enioye.

²⁰ Then saide Noemi vnto her doughter in law: blessed be he for he ceaseth not to do the same goodnesse to the dead, that he did to the lyuynge. And Noemi said vnto her: the man is nye vnto vs, euen of our next kinne.

²³ And so she kept her by the maydens of Booz, together vnto the ende of barley haruest & of whete heruest also: and dwelt with her mother in law.

¹ Then Noemi her mother in law sayd vnto her: my doughter I wil seke reast for the, that thou maieste be in better case.

And se, I haue gathered a few styckes for to go & bake it for my and my sonne, that we maye eate it, and then dye.

And he answered: I know it also, holde your peace. ⁶ And Eliah sayd to him: tary I pray the here, for the lord hath sent me to Iordan But he sayde: as surely as the Lord liueth, and as thy soule lyueth, I will not leaue the. ¹ And there cryed a certayn woman of the wyues of the chyldren of the Prophetes, vnto Elizeus saying: thy seruaunt my husband is deade, and thou knowest that thy seruaunt dyd feare the Lorde. And the creditor is come to fet my two sonnes, to be his bondemen.

³¹ Then he sayd: God do so and so to me, yf the head of Elizeus the sonne of Saphat tarye on hym thys daye.

¹ Then spake Elizeus vnto the woman whose sonne he had restored to lyfe agayne, sayinge: vp & go both thou and thyne house & soiourne where thou thinkeste best, for the Lorde wyll call a darthe whiche shall come on the lande seuen yeare. ² And the woman arose and dyd after the saying of the man of God, & went both she & her houshold & soiourned in the lande of the Philistines seuen yeare. ³ And at the seuen yeares end, when the woman was come agayne oute of the land of the Philistines she wente oute to speake to the kynge for her house, and for her land.

²¹ and sayde: Naked came I out of my mothers wombe, & naked shall I turne thether agayne. The Lorde gaue, and the Lord hath taken awaye now blessed be the name of the Lorde.

¹⁷ Beholde, happye is the man, whom God punisheth: therfore, despyse not thou the chastenynge of the Almyghty.

⁴ For the arowes of the almyghty are in me, whose indignacyon hath droncke vp my sprete, and the terrible feares of GOD fyghte agaynste me.

¹⁷ Thou bringeste fresh wytnesses against me, thy wrath increaseste thou vpon me, very many are the plages that I am in.

⁷ Wylt thou fynde out God with thy sekinge? wilt thou attayne to the perfectnesse of the almyghtye?

²⁶ That thou layest so sharpely to my charge, and wilt vtterlye vndo me, for the synnes of my youth?

⁸ (wherof my wryncles beare wytnesse) there standeth vp a dyssembler to make me aunswere wyth lyes to my face.

⁶ knowe thys then, that it is God, whiche hath handled me so violently & hath compased me aboute with his scourges.

²¹ Haue pyte vpon me, haue pite vpon me (O ye my frendes) for the hande of the Lorde hath touched me.

³ All my delytes is vpon the saynctes that are in the earth, and vpon suche lyke.

⁴ And because thy hand was so heuy vpon me both daye and nyght, my moysture was lyke the drouth in Sommer. Selah.

¹⁹ Great are the troubles of the righteous, but the Lorde delyuereth them out of all.

³ The woordes of hys mouth are vnrighteousnes and disceate, he will not be learned to do good.

² For thyne arrowes stycke fast in me, and thy hande presseth me sore.

⁹ I kepe sylence, and open not my mouthe, for thou hast done it. ¹⁰ Turne thy plages awaye fro me, for I am consumed thorow the feare of thy hande.

¹⁰ Herken (O daughter) considre, & enclyne thyne eare: forget thyne owne people, & thy fathers house.

¹⁴ Wherefore shoulde I be then punyshed dayly, & be chastened euery mornynge?

¹⁵ My strength is gone for very sorow & myserye, wyh fearfulnesse do I beare thy burthens.

³⁰ But if hys chyldren forsake my law, and walke not in my iudgementes. ³¹ If they breake myne ordynaunces, & kepe not my commaundementes. ³² I will vyset their offences wyth the rodde, and their synnes wit scourges.

¹⁴ Thou bringest forth grasse for the cattell, and grene herbes for the seruice of men. Thou bringest fode out of the earth: ¹⁵ wyne to make glad the herte of man, oyle to make hym a chearfull countenaunce and bread to strength mans herte.

¹⁶ Moreouer he called for a dearth vpon the lande, and destroyed all the prouysyon of breade.

³⁴ A frutefull lande maketh he baren, for the wickednesse of them that dwell therin.

⁵ He geueth meat vnto them, that feare him he is euer myndfull of hys couenaunte.

⁶³ I am a companyon of all them that feare the, and kepe thy commaundementes.

⁵ As for suche as turne backe vnto their owne wickednesse, the Lorde shall leade them forth with the euell doers: but peace be vpon Israell.

¹⁵ I wyll blesse her vytalles wyth increase, and wyll satysfye her poore with bread.

⁷ Is not that the glorious cytye, whiche hath bene of longe antiquitie? whose natiues dwelling farre of, commende her so greatly?

He hath smytten my teth in peces, & rolled me in the dust. ¹⁷ He hath put my soule out of rest, I forget all good thynges. ¹⁸ I thought in my selfe: I am vndone, there is no hope for me in the Lorde. ¹⁹ Zain. O remembre yet my mysery & my trouble the wormwod and the gall. ²⁰ Yee thou shalt remembre them, for my soule melteth awaye in me.

¹³ Thou sonne of man, when the lande synneth againste me, & goeth forthe in wyckednesse: I will stretche oute myne hand vpon it, & destroye all the prouysyon of theyr bread, and sende derth vpon them, to destroy man & beast in the lande.

⁶ Therfore haue I geuen you ydle teeth in all youre cytyes, and carnesse of bread in all your places, yet wil ye not turne vnto me, sayeth the Lorde.

²³ Thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes: In that tyme shal ten men (out of al maner of languages of the Gentiles) take one Iew by the hemme of his garment, and saye: we wyl go with you, for we haue hearde, that God is amonge you.

⁵ I wil come and punish you, and I my selfe will be a swyf wytnes against the witches, agaynst the aduouterers, agaynste false swearers: yea, and agaynst those, that wrongeouslye kepe backe the hyrelinges dewtye: which vexe the widdowes and the fatherlesse and oppresse the straunger, and feare not me, sayeth the Lord of Hostes.
