²¹ My sonne, feare thou the Lord and the kyng, and kepe no company with the sclaunderous:

³¹ And when Israel sawe that myghty hande which the Lorde had shewed vpon the Egypcians they feared the Lorde: & beleued both the Lorde, and also hys seruaunte Moses.

¹ And Corah the sonne of Iezehar the sonne of Cahath the sonne of Leui and Dathan & Abiram the sonnes of Eliab, and On, the sonne of Peleth, the sonne of Ruben: ² stode vp before Moses, wyth other of the chyldren of Israell .ij. hundred and fyftye heades of the congregation and councelours, and men of fame, ³ and they gathered them selues togyther agaynst Moses and Aaron and sayed vnto them: ye haue done inough. For all the, multitude are holy euery one of them & the Lorde is amonge them. Why therefore heaue we our selues vp aboue the congregaon of the Lorde.

⁵ and sayd vnto him: behold thou art olde, & thy sonnes folow not thy wayes. Now therfor make vs a king to iudge vs, as all other nacions haue. ⁶ But the thyng displeased Samuell, when they sayde: geue vs a kynge to iudge vs. And Samuel prayed vnto the Lorde. ⁷ And the Lord sayd vnto Samuel: heare the voyce of the people in all that they say vnto the. For they haue not cast the awaye, but me: that I shulde not raygne ouer them.

¹² And for al that when you sawe that Nahas the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye sayde vnto me: not so, a kynge shall raygne ouer vs, when yet the Lord your god was your Kyng. ¹³ Now therfore beholde, the kynge whome ye haue chosen and whome ye haue desyred: se, the Lorde hath geuen you a Kynge, ¹⁴ Oh, that ye wolde feare the Lorde & serue hym, & heare hys voyce, & not disobeye the mouth of the Lorde: and that both ye and the Kynge that raygneth ouer you, wolde folow the Lorde your God. ¹⁵ For yf ye shal not herken vnto the voyce of the Lorde, but shall disobeye the Lordes mouthe: then shal the hand of the Lorde be vpon you & on youre fathers. ¹⁶ Now also stande & se thys great thyng which the Lorde wyl do before youre eyes: ¹⁷ is it not now wheteheruest. And yet for al that, I wyl call vnto the Lorde, and he shall sende thunder and rayne. Wherby perceyue and vnderstand how that your wyckednes is great which ye haue done in the syght of the Lorde in askyng you a Kynge. ¹⁸ And when Samuel called vnto the Lorde, the Lorde sent thunder & rayne the same daye. And all the people feared the Lord and Samuel excedynglye. ¹⁹ Then sayde all the people vnto Samuel: praye for thy seruauntes vnto the Lorde thy God, that we dye not: for we haue synned in askyng vs a kynge, besyde all the synnes that euer we dyd.

⁶ And he sayde vnto his men: the Lord kepe me from doying that thing vnto my maister that is the lordes anoynted, to lay mine hand vpon him, seyng he is the lordes anoynted.

¹³ And there came a messenger to Dauid & sayd: the hertes of the men of Israel are to folow Absalom. ¹⁴ Then sayd Dauid vnto all hys seruauntes that were wyth hym at Ierusalem: vp & let vs flee, for we shall not else escape from Absalom: Make spede to depart: leste he come sodenly & catche vs, & bryng some myscheue vpon vs, & smyte the cytie with the edge of the swerde. ¹⁵ And the kynges seruauntes sayde to hym: beholde thy seruauntes are ready to whatsoeuer my Lord the kynge shall appoynte. ¹⁶ And the kyng and all hys houshold departed a fote. And he left behynde hym ten wiues that were hys concubynes, to kepe the house. ¹⁷ And so the king & al the people went out a fote, & taryed farre from the house, ¹⁸ And all hys seruauntes went by hys syde. And al the Cerethites & all the Phelethites, and al the Hethytes euen .vi. hundred men which were come a fote from Geth, went before the kyng. ¹⁹ Then sayd the kyng to Ethai the Gethite, wherfore shuldest thou go wyth vs also. Returne and abyde wyth the kynge, for thou art a straunger, and arte remoued from thyne owne place. ²⁰ Thou camest but yesterdaye, and shulde I vnquyet the to daye to go wyth vs? I wyl go whether I go. But returne thou and carye agayne thy brethren: Mercy and truth be with the. ²¹ And Ethai aunswered the kyng & said: as surelye as the Lorde lyueth, & as surelye as my Lorde the kynge lyueth, in what place my Lorde the Kyng shalbe, whether in deathe or lyfe, euen there wyll thy seruaunt be. ²² Then sayde the kynge to Ethai, come & go forward. And Ethai the Gethite went forthe, & all hys men, and all the chyldren that were wyth him. ²³ And all the countrey wept wyth a loud voice. And all the people went forwarde the straight waye to the wyldernesse. ²⁴ And beholde, Sadock and all the Leuytes were wyth him and bare the arcke of the appoyntmente of God. And when they had set doune the arck of god Abiathar came vp, vntyll the people were all come ouer, oute of the cytye. ²⁵ Then sayde the kynge vnto Sadock. Carye the arcke of God agayne into the cytye. If I shall fynd fauour in the eyes of the Lorde, he wyll bryng me agayne, and shewe me both it and the tabernacle therof also. ²⁶ But and yf the Lorde thus say: I haue no luste vnto the. Beholde, here am I, let hym do wyth me what semeth best in hys eyes. ²⁷ The kynge sayde also vnto Sadoch the prieste: thou arte a sear. Returne therfore into the cytye in peace. And take youre two sonnes wyth you: Ahimaaz thy sonne, and Ionathas the sonne of Abiathar. ²⁸ And se, I wyll tarye in the feldes of the wyldernesse vntyll there come some worde from you to be tolde me. ²⁹ And so Sadock and Abiathar caryed the arcke of God agayne to Ierusalem, and they taryed there. ³⁰ And Dauid went vp on mount Oliuet & wepte as he wente, and had hys head couered & went therto barefote. And all the people that was wyth him, had euery man hys head couered, and as they went wepte also. ³¹ And one tolde Dauid saying: Ahithophel is one of them that haue conspyred wyth Absalom. Then sayde Dauid: O Lorde, turne the councell of Ahithophel into folyshnes. ³² When Dauid was come to the toppe of the mount, & had bowed hym self vnto God: beholde, Husai the Arachite came agaynst hym with hys coote torne and earth vpon his head. ³³ Vnto whom Dauid sayde: yf thou go wyth me thou shalt be a burthen vnto me. ³⁴ And yf thou returne to the cytye: then shalt thou saye vnto Absalom: I wyl be thy seruaunt O kyng: thus long haue I ben thy fathers seruaunt, & now I am thyne. And destroye me the councell of Ahithophel. ³⁵ And thou hast there with the Sadock & Abiathar the priestes, vnto which thou shalt shew all that thou canst heare out of the kynges house. ³⁶ And behold, ye haue there with you theyr two sonnes: Ahimaaz Sadockes sonne, & Ionathas Abiathars sonne, by whiche ye shall sende me all that ye can heare. ³⁷ And so Husai Dauids frende gat hym to the cytye. And Absalom also entered into Ierusalem.

¹⁶ And when all Israel sawe that the kynge regarded them not, the people aunswered the kynge agayne sayinge: we haue no parte in Dauid, nor enheritaunce in the sonne of Isai. To youre tentes therfor Israel, & nowe se to thyne owne house Dauid. And so Israell departed vnto theyr tentes.

² Kepe the kynges commaundemente (I warne the) and the othe that thou haste made vnto god. ³ Be not hasty to go out of hys syght, and se thou contynue in no euell thynge: for whatsoeuer it pleaseth him, that doth he, ⁴ Lyke as when a kynge geueth a charge, hys commaundemente is myghtye: Euen so who maye saye vnto hym what doest thou? ⁵ Who so kepeth the commaundement, shal fele no harme: but a wise mans herte discerneth tyme and maner:

²¹ They sayed vnto him: Cesars. Then sayed he vnto them: Gyue therfore to Cesar, that which is Cesars: And gyue vnto God, that which is Goddes.

¹ Let euery soule submit him selfe vnto the authoritie of the hygher powers. For there is no power but of God. ² The powers that be are ordeyned of God. Whosoeuer therfore resisteth power, resisteth the ordinaunce of GOD. And they that resiste, shall receyue to them selfe damnacyon. ³ For rulars are not to be feared for good workes, but for euyll. Wylte thou be wyth oute feare of the power? Do well then: and so shalte thou be praysed of the same. ⁴ For he is the minister of GOD, for thy welth. But and yf thou do euyll, then feare: for he beareth not a swearde for noughte, but is the minister of God, to take vengeaunce on them that do euyll. ⁵ Wherfore ye muste nedes obeye, not for feare of vengeaunce onelye, but also because of conscience. ⁶ And euen for thys cause paye ye trybute. For they are Goddes ministers, seruynge for the same purpose. ⁷ Geue to euerye man therfore hys dutye: Tribute to whom trybute belongeth: Custome to whom custome is due: feare to whome feare belongeth: Honoure to whom honoure pertayneth.

¹ Warne them that they submytte them selues to rule and power to obeye the offycers that they be ready vnto al good workes

¹³ Submyt youre selues vnto all maner ordinaunce of man for the Lordes sake, whether it be vnto the kynge as vnto the chiefe heade: ¹⁴ other vnto rulars, as vnto them that are sent of hym, for the punyshemente of euyll doars: but for the laude of them that do wel. ¹⁵ For so is the wyll of God, that ye put to sylence the ignorauncye of the folyshe men: ¹⁶ as fre, and not as hauynge the lybertye for a cloke of maliciousnes, but euen as the seruauntes of God. ¹⁷ Honoure all men. Loue brotherlye felowship. Feare God, and honour the kynge.
