⁸ Notwithstandynge when ye knewe not God ye dyd seruyce vnto them, which by nature were no Goddes.

² And Pharao answered: what felowe is the Lorde, that I should heare hys voyce for to let Israell go?

² And Iosua sayde vnto all the people, thus saith the Lord God of Israel: your fathers dwelt on the other syde of the floude in olde tyme euen Thareh the father of Abraham and Nachor, and serued straunge Goddes.

¹⁵ But yf it seme euyll vnto you to serue the Lorde, then chose you thys day whom you wyll serue whether the Goddes whiche youre fathers serued that were on the other syde of the floude, eyther the Goddes of the Amorytes in whose lande, ye dwelte, and I & my house wyll serue the Lorde.

⁹ And haue ye not caste out the priestes of the Lord the sonnes of Aaron, & the Leuites, & haue made you priestes lyke the nacyons of other landes: euen whosoeuer cometh, and fylleth his hand with an oxe & seuen rammes, the same is made priest to them that are no Goddes.

⁴ Their ymages are but syluer and gold, euen the worke of mens handes. ⁵ They haue mouthes, and speake not: eies haue they, but they se not. ⁶ Thei haue eares, and heare not: noses haue they, but they smell not. ⁷ They haue handes, and handle not, fete haue they, but they cannot goo, neyther can they speake thorow their throte. ⁸ They that made them, are lyke vnto them and so are all suche as put theyr truste in them.

¹⁵ As for the ymages of the Heathen, they are but siluer and golde, the worcke of mens handes. ¹⁶ They haue mouthes, and speake not: eyes haue they, but they se not. ¹⁷ They haue eares, and yet they heare not, neyther is ther any breath in their mouthes. ¹⁸ They that make them, are lyke vnto them, and so are all they that put their trust in them.

¹⁹ and cast their goddes in the fyre. Not wythstandynge those were no goddes but the worckes of mens handes, of wod or stone, therfore haue they destroyed them.

⁹ Wherfore all caruers of Idoles are but vayne, & their labour lost. They must beare recorde them selues, that (seyng they came nether se ner vnderstande) they shalbe confounded. ¹⁰ Who shulde now make a God, or fashion an Idole, that is profytable for nothynge? ¹¹ Beholde, all the felowshyppe of them must be brought to confusyon. Let all the worckmaisters of them come and stande together from amonge men: they must be abashed and confounded one with another. ¹² The smith taketh yron, and tempereth it with hoate coales, and fashyoneth it with hammers, and maketh it with all the strength of his armes: yee sometyme he is faynt for very hunger, & so thurstye, that he hath no more power. ¹³ The carpenter, (or ymage caruer) taketh meat of the tymbre: & spredeth forth hys lyne: he maketh it with some coloure: he playneth it, he ruleth it, & squareth it, & maketh it after the ymage of a man, and accordynge to the bewtye of a man: that it maye stande in the temple. ¹⁴ Moreouer, he goeth oute to hewe downe Cedre trees: He bryngeth home Elmes and Okes, and other tymbre of the wod. Or els the Fyrre trees which he planted hym self, & soch as the rayne hath swelled, ¹⁵ whyche wod serueth for men to burne. Of this he taketh and warmeth him selfe with all: he maketh a fyre of it to bake bred. And afterwarde maketh a God there of, to honoure it: & an Idole to knele before it. ¹⁶ One pece he burneth in the fyre, with another he rosteth flesh, that he maye eate roste hys bely full: wyth the thyrde he warmeth hym self, & sayeth: Aha, I am well warmed, I haue bene at the fyre. ¹⁷ And of the resydue he maketh hym a God, and an Idole for hym selfe. He kneleth before it, he worshyppeth it, he prayeth vnto it, and sayeth: deliuer me, for thou art my God. ¹⁸ Yet men nether considre ner vnderstande, because their eyes are stopped, that they can not se: and their hertes, that they cannot perceyue. ¹⁹ They pondre not in their myndes, for they haue nether knowledge ner vnderstandyng, to thyncke thus: I haue brent one pece in the fyre: I haue baked bred with the coles there of, I haue rosted flesh with all, & eaten it: shall I now of the resydue make an abhomynacyon, & fall downe before a rotten pece of wodd? ²⁰ The kepyng of dust, and folishnesse of herte hath turned them asyde: so that none of them can haue a fre conscience to thyncke maye not I erre?

¹¹ whether the Gentiles them selues deale so fastly and vntruly with their goddes (whiche yet are no Goddes in dede.) But my people hath geuen ouer their hye honoure, for a thinge that maye not helpe them.

³ yea all the customes and lawes of the Gentiles are nothinge, but vanite. They hewe doune a tree in the wood with the handes of the worcke man, and fashyon it with the axe: ⁴ they couer it ouer with gold or siluer, they fasten it with nayles and hammers, that it moue not. ⁵ It standeth as styfe as the palmetree, it can not neyther speake nor go, but must be borne. Be not ye afrayed of suche, for they can do neyther good nor euill. ⁶ But there is none lyke vnto the, O Lorde, & great is the name of thy power. ⁷ Who wolde not feare the? Or what Kinge of the Gentyles wolde not obeye the. For amonge all the wyse men of the Gentyles, & in all their kyngdomes, there is none that maye be lickened vnto the. ⁸ They are all together vnlearned and vnwyse. All theyr conninge is but vanyte: ⁹ namelye, woode, syluer, whiche is brought oute of Tharsis, and beaten to plates: and golde from Ophir, a worcke that is made with the hande of the craftesmen and the caster, clothed with yelowe sylcke & scarlet: euen so is the worcke of theyr wyse men altogether. ¹⁰ But the Lorde is a true God, a lyuynge God, and an euerlastinge kyng. Yf he be wroth, the earthe shaketh: all the Gentiles maye not abyde his indygnacyon. ¹¹ As for theyr Goddes, it maye well be sayde of them: they are Goddes, that made neyther heauen nor earthe: therfore shall they peryshe from the earthe, & from al thynges vnder heauen ¹² But (as for oure God) he made the earth with his power, and with hys wysdom hath he fynished the whole compasse of the worlde, wyth hys discrecion hath he spred oute the heauens. ¹³ At his voyce the waters gather together in the ayre, he draweth vp the cloudes from the vttermoste partes of the earth: he turneth lyghtenyng to rayne, & bryngeth forth the windes oute of theyr treasures: ¹⁴ Hys wysdom maketh all men fooles. And confounded be all casters of ymages, for that they cast, is but a vayne thynge, and hath no lyfe. ¹⁵ The vayne craftesmen with theyr worckes, that they in theyr vanite haue made, shall peryshe one with another in the tyme of vysitacyon. ¹⁶ Neuertheles, Iacobs porcyon is not suche: but it is he, that hath made all thynges, and Israel is the rode of hys enherytaunce: The Lorde of Hostes is his name.

²⁵ Poure oute thyne indygnacion rather vpon the Gentyles, that knowe the not, and vpon the people that call not on thy name: And that because they haue consumed, deuoured and destroyed Iacob, and haue roted out hys glorye.

¹⁰ He was in the worlde, & the worlde was made by him, & yet the worlde knewe him not.

¹² And they called Barnabas Iupiter and Paul Mercurius, because he was the preacher.

²³ For as I passed by, and behelde the master, howe ye worshyppe youre Goddes, I founde an Altare wherein was wrytten: vnto the vnknowen God. Whom ye then ignorauntelye worshyppe hym, shew I vnto you.

²⁹ For as muche then as we are the generacyon of God, we ought not to thinke that the God hede is lyke vnto golde, syluer, or stone grauen by crafte and ymagynacyon of man. ³⁰ And the tyme of thys ignoraunce God regarded not. But now he byddeth all men euerye where repent,

²³ and tourned the glorye of the immortall God, vnto the the similitude of the Image of mortall man, and of byrdes, and foure foted beastes, and of serpentes.

²⁸ And as it semed not good vnto them to be a knowen of God, euen so God deliuered them vp vnto a leud minde, that they should do those thinges, whiche were not comly,

²¹ Hath not God made the wysdome of thys worlde folyshnes? For when the world thorough wysdome knewe not God, in the wisdom of God, it pleased God thorough folishnes of preachynge to saue them that beleue.

⁴ To speake of meate dedicate vnto Idols, we are sure that there is none Idol in the world and that there is none other God but one.

¹⁹ What saye I then? that the Image is any thinge? or that it whiche is offered to Images is anye thinge? ²⁰ Naye, but I saye, that these thinges, whiche the Gentyles offer, they offer to deuyls, and not to God. And I woulde not that ye should haue felloushippe wt the deuyls.

² Ye knowe that ye were Gentyles, and wente your wayes vnto domme Idols, euen as you were led.

¹¹ Wherfore remember that ye, beynge in tyme passed Gentyles in fleshe, and were called vncircumcision to them whiche are called circumcision in the fleshe, whiche circumcision is made by handes: ¹² Remember I saye, that ye were at that tyme without Christe, and were reputed aliantes from the commen welth of Israel, and were straungers from the testamentes of promes, and had no hope and were wythout God in thys worlde.

¹⁸ blynded in theyr vnderstandynge, beynge straungers from the lyfe whiche is in God thorowe the ignoraunce that is in them, because of the blyndnes of theyr hertes:

⁹ For they them selues shewe of you, what maner of entering in we had vnto you, and howe ye turned vnto God from Images, for to serue the liuing and true God,

⁵ and not in the luste of concupiscence, as do the heathen, which know not God,

⁸ in flammynge fyre, rendrynge vengeaunce vnto them that knowe not God, and to them that obeye not vnto the Gospel of our Lorde Iesus Christ,

³ For it is sufficient for vs, that we haue spent the time that is past of the lyfe, after the wil of the Gentiles, walking in wantonnes, lustes, dronckennes, in eatinge, drinkinge & in abominable Idolatrie.

¹ Beholde what loue the father hath shewed on vs, that we shoulde be called the sonnes of God. For this cause the worlde knoweth you not, because it knoweth not him.
