²⁹ Then shall they learne to knowe, that I am the Lorde, when I make the lande waste and desolate, because of all theyr abomynacyons, that they haue wrought.

¹⁸ And the Egyptians shal know that I am the Lord whan I haue gotten me honour vpon Pharao vpon his charettes and vpon his horssemen.

⁹ And the chyldren of Israel wrapt them selues in thynges that were not well toward the Lorde their God. And they buylte them hylaulters in al theyr cytyes, bothe in the toures where they kepte watche, and also in the strong tounes. ¹⁰ And they made them Images & groues on euerye hye hyll, & vnder euerye grene tree. ¹¹ And there they sacrifyced in the hylaulters, as dyd the hethen which the Lorde caried awaye at theyr commynge, & wrought weked dedes, to angre the Lord wyth al. ¹² And they serued Idoles, wherof the Lord had said to them: ye shall not do so. ¹³ And the Lorde testifyed to Israel & to Iuda, by all the Prophetes & by al the sears sayinge: Turne from youre wicked wayes & kepe my commaundementes & myne ordinaunces accordynge to all the lawes which I commaunded youre fathers, & as I sente to you by my seruauntes the prophetes. ¹⁴ Notwithstanding they wolde not heare, but hardened their neckes, lyke to the neckes of their fathers that dyd not beleue the Lorde theyr God. ¹⁵ And they refused his ordinaunce & his appoyntemente that he had made wyth theyr fathers, and the wytnesse which he had witnessed to them, and folowed vanitie and became vayne, lyke to the hethen that were rounde aboute them, of whiche the Lorde had charged them, that they shuld not do lyke them. ¹⁶ But they lefte the commaundementes of the Lorde their God, and made them Images of metall, euen .ij. calues: & made groues, and bowed them selues vnto all the host of heauen, & serued Baal, ¹⁷ And they sacrificed their sonnes & their doughters in fyre, & vsed witchcraft & enchauntementes, & were solde to worcke wickednes in the sight of the Lorde for to angre hym. ¹⁸ Wherfore the Lorde was excedyng wrothe with Israel & put them oute of hys sighte, that there was lefte but the trybe of Iuda onelye,

¹⁴ Therto all the rulers of the preastes with the people trespaced a pace after all maner of abhomynacyons of the hethen & poluted the house of the Lorde which he had halowed in Ierusalem. ¹⁵ And the Lord God of theyr fathers sent to them by his messengers, sendynge them be tymes: for he had compassyon on hys people & on his dwellynge place. ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God & despised theyr wordes & mysse vsed his prophetes, vntyll the wrath of the Lord so arose agaynst hys people that it was past remeadie. ¹⁷ And so he brought vpon them the kyng of Caldeye & slue theyr young men with the swerde in theyr holy temple, & nether spared younge man nor mayden, nether olde man, nether so moche as hym that stowped for age: But gaue all into his hande.

¹⁶ Thus the Lord is knowen to execute true iudgemente, when the vngodly is trapped in the woorkes of hys owne handes. Selah.

¹⁷ Let them be confounded and vexed euer more and more: let them be put to shame and perishe. ¹⁸ That they may know that thou art alone that thy name is the Lorde, & that thou onely art the moost hyest ouer all the earth.

¹ Loke thorow Ierusalem, beholde and se: Seke thorow the her stretes also wythin, yf ye can fynde one man, that doth equall and right, or that laboureth to be faythfull: and I shall spare hym (sayeth the Lorde.) ² For though they can saye: the Lorde liueth, yet do they sweare to disceyue: ³ Where as thou (O Lorde) lokest only vpon faythe and truthe. Thou hast scourged them, but they toke no repentaunce: thou hast correcte them for amendement, but they refused thy correccion. They made their faces harder then a stone, and woulde not amende. ⁴ Therfore I thought in my selfe: peraduenture they are so symple and folish, that they vnderstande nothinge of the Lordes waye, and iudgementes of our God. ⁵ Therfore wil I go vnto their heades and rulers, and talke with them: yf they knowe the waie of the lord and the iudgementes of oure God. But these (in like maner) haue broken the yocke, and burste the bandes in sonder. ⁶ Wherfore a lyon out of the wood shall hurte them, and a wolfe in the euenyng shall destroy them. The cat of the mountayne shal lye lurking by their cities, to teare in peces al them, that come thereoute. For theyr offences are manye, and theyr departynge awaye is greate. ⁷ Shulde I then for al thys haue mercy vpon the? Thy chyldren haue forsaken me, & sworne by them that are no Goddes. And albe it they were bounde to me in maryage, yet they fell to aduoutrye, and haunted harlottes houses. ⁸ In the desyre of vnclenly luste they are become lyke the stoned horse, euery man neyeth at hys neyghbours wyfe: ⁹ Shulde I not correcte thys, sayeth the Lorde. Shulde I not be auenged of euerye people that is lyke vnto this?

²⁵ Neuertheles youre mysdedes haue turned these from you, and your synnes haue robbed you hereof. ²⁶ For amonge my people are founde wicked personnes, that pryuelye laye snares & wayte for men, to take them & destroye them. ²⁷ And lyke as a net is ful of byrdes, so are their houses full of that which they haue gotten wt falshed and disceyte. Hereof commeth theyr greate substaunce and ryches, ²⁸ hereof are they fat and welthy, and are runne awaye fro me wyth shameful blasphemyes. They mynistre not the lawe, they make no ende of the fatherlesses cause, they iudge not the poore according to equite. ²⁹ Shulde I not punyshe these thynges, saith the Lorde? shulde I not be auenged of al suche people, as these be? ³⁰ Horryble and greuous thinges are done in the lande. ³¹ The Prophetes teache falsely, and the priestes folowe them, and my people hath pleasure therein. What wyll come thereof at the laste.

⁷ Youre slayne men shall lye amonge you, that ye maye learne to knowe, how that I am the Lorde.

¹¹ The Lorde sayde moreouer vnto me: Smyte thyne handes together, and stampe wyth thay fete, & saye: Wo worth all the abhominacions and wickednesses of the house of Israel, for because of them, they shall perishe wyth the swearde, with honger & wyth pestilence.

²⁷ The king shal mourne, the Princes shalbe clothed with heuinesse, and the handes of the people in the lande shall tremble for feare. I wyll do vnto them after theyr owne wayes, and according to theyr owne iudgementes wyll I iudge them, to learne them for to knowe, that I am the Lorde.

⁶ And he sayd further more vnto me: Thou sonne of man, seist thou what these do? Seyst thou the great abhomynacyons that the house of Israel commytte in this place? which oughte not to be done in my sanctuarye? But turne the aboute, and thou shalte se yet greater abhomynacyons. ⁷ And with that broughte he me to the courtegate, & when I loked, beholde, there was an hole in the wal. ⁸ Then sayd he vnto me: Thou sonne of man, dygge thorowe the wall. And when I dygged thorow the wal, behold, ther was a dore. ⁹ And he sayde vnto me: Go thy waye in, & loke what wycked abhomynacions they do there. ¹⁰ So I wente in, & sawe: and beholde, there were all maner ymages of wormes & beastes, all Idoles and abhominacions of the house of Israel paynted euery one round aboute the wall. ¹¹ There stode also before the ymages .lxx. lordes of the councell of the house of Israel, and in the myddeste of them stode Iaazamah the sonne of Saphan: and euerye one of them had a censoure in hys hande, and out of the incense, there wente a smoke, as it had bene a cloude. ¹² Then sayde he vnto me: Thou sonne of man, haste thou sene what the Senatoures of the house of Israel do secretly euerye one in hys chambre: For they saye: Tush, the Lorde seyth vs not, the Lord regardeth not the worlde. ¹³ And he sayde vnto me: Turne the yet agayne, and thou shalte se the greate abhomynacyons that they do. ¹⁴ And with that he broughte me to the dore of the port of the Lordes house, towarde the north. And beholde there sate women mournynge for Thamus. ¹⁵ Then sayde he vnto me: haste thou sene this thou sonne of man. Turne the about & thou shalte se yet greater abhomynacyons.

² thou sonne of man, wilt thou not reproue his bluodthursty citye? Shewe hem their abhomynacions, ³ and tell them: Thus sayeth the Lorde God: O thou cyty, that sheddest bloude in the middest of the, that thy tyme may come also: & makest the Idoles to defyle the withall. ⁴ Thou haste made thy selfe gyltye, in the bloud that thou hast shed: & defyled the in the Idoles, whiche thou hast made. Thou hast caused thy dayes to drawe nye, & made the tyme of thy yeares to come. Therfore wyll I make the to be confounded among the Heathen, & to be despysed in all the landes, ⁵ whether they be nye or farre from the: they shal laugh the to scorne, thou that hast gotten the so foule a name, & art full of myschefe. ⁶ Beholde, the rulers of Israel haue brought euery man his power, to shed bloud in the. ⁷ In the haue they dispysed father & mother, in the haue they oppressed the straunger, in the haue they vexed the widdowe and the fatherlesse. ⁸ Thou haste despysed my Sanctuarye, and vnhalowed my Sabboth. ⁹ Murtherers are there in the, that shede bloude, & eate vpon the hylles, and in the they vse vnhappynesse. ¹⁰ In the haue they discouered their fathers shame, in the haue they vexed wemen in their sicknesse. ¹¹ Euery man hath dealte shamefully wyth hys neyghboures wyfe, and abhomynably defiled his doughter in law. In the hath euery man forced his owne syster, euen his fathers doughter: ¹² yea gyftes haue bene receyued in the, to shede bloude. Thou haste taken vsury and encreace, thou haste oppressed thy neyghbours by extorcion, and forgotten me, sayeth the Lorde God. ¹³ Beholde, I haue smitten my handes vpon thy couetousnesse, that thou hast vsed, and vpon the bloude whyche hath bene shed in the. ¹⁴ Is thy herte able to endure it, or may thy handes defende them selues in the tyme that I shall brynge vpon the? Euen I the Lorde that speake it, will brynge it also to passe. ¹⁵ I will scatre the amonge the Heathen, and strow the aboute in the landes, & wil cause thy filthinesse to ceasse oute of the:

²⁵ thy Prophetes that are in the, are sworne together to deuoure soules, lyke as a roarynge Lyon, that lyueth by his praye. They receyue ryches and good, and make many widdowes in the. ²⁶ Thy priestes breake my lawe, and defyle my Sanctuarye. They put no dyfference betwene the holy and vnholy, nether discerne betwene the cleane and vncleane: they turne their eyes from my Sabbothes, & I am vnhalowed among them. ²⁷ Thy rulers in the ate like rauishing wolues, to shed bloude, and to destroye soules, for their owne couetous lucre. ²⁸ As for thy Prophetes, they dawbe wyth vntempered claye, they se vanytyes, and prophecye lyes vnto them, sayinge: the Lorde God sayeth so, where as the Lorde hathe not spoken. ²⁹ The people in the lande vseth wicked extorcyon and robbery. They vexe the poore and nedye and oppresse the straunger agaynste ryghte. ³⁰ And I soughte in the lande for a man, that woulde make vp the hedge, and set him selfe in the gappe before me in the landes behalfe, that I shoulde not vtterlye destroy it: but I coulde fynde none. ³¹ Therfore will I pour out my cruel displeasure vpon them, and burne them in the fyre in my wrath: their owne wayes will I recompence vpon their heades sayeth the Lorde God.

⁴⁹ And so they shal lay your filthinesse vpon your owne selues, & ye shalbe punished for the sinnes, that ye haue committed with your Idols, & ye shall know that I am the Lorde.

¹¹ Euen thus will I punishe Moab also, that they may knowe, how that I am the Lorde.

¹⁷ O thou sonne of man, when the house of Israell dwelt vpon their owne grounde they defyled them selues with their owne wayes and ymagynacyons: so that in my syght theyr waye was lyke the vnclennesse of a menstrous woman. ¹⁸ Wherfore I poured my wrathfull dyspleasure vpon them, because of the bloude that they had shed in the lande, and because of their Idoles, wherwith they had defyled them selues.

⁹ that thou mayest be called a cytye of the Lorde, & that thy name maye be ryghtuousnesse. Heare (O ye trybes) who wolde els geue you soch warnynge? ¹⁰ Shulde I not be displeased, for the vnrightuous good in the houses of the wycked, and because the measure hys mynyshed? ¹¹ Or shulde I iustifie the false balaunces and the bagge of disceytfull weyghtes, ¹² amonge those that be full of ryches vnryghtuously gotten: where the cyte syns deale with falshede, speake lies, & haue dysceytfull tunges in their mouthes?

¹ Wo to the abhomynable, fylthy & cruell cytie: ² whiche will not heart, nor be refourmed. Get trust is not in the Lord, neither wyll she holde her to her goo. ³ Her rulers within her are as roaryng lyons: her iudges are as wolues in the euenynge, which leaue nothynge behynde them tyll the morowe. ⁴ Her prophetes are lyght persones & vnfaythfull men: her priestes vnhalowe the Sanctuarye, and do wrong vnder the pretence of the lawe.
