¹⁸ and aboute the tyme of .xl. yeares suffred he theyr maners in the wyldernes.

² And the hole multitude of the chyldren of Israel murmured agaynst Moses & Aaron in the wyldernesse,

³⁵ And the chyldren of Israell ate man .xl. yere vntyll they came vnto a lande inhabited. And so they ate Man, euen vntyl they came vnto the borders of the lande of Canaan.

²² For of al those men which haue sene my glorye & my miracles which I did in Egypte & in the wyldernesse, & yet haue tempted me now this .x. tymes & haue not herkened vnto my voyce,

³³ And your chyldren shall wandre in this wildernesse .xl. yeres and suffer for your whoredome vntil your carkesses be wasted in the wildernesse, ³⁴ after the nombre of the daies in which ye serched out the land .xl. daies, & euery daye a yere: so that they shall beare your vnryghteousnes .xl. yere, & ye shal fele my vengeaunce

³¹ and in the wyldernesse: as thou hast sene how that the Lorde thy God bare the as a man shoulde beare hys sonne, thorow out all the waye which ye haue gone vntyll ye came vnto this place.

⁷ Remembre & forget not how thou prouokedest the lord thy God in the wildernes: for sence the day that thou camest out of the land of Egipt vntil ye came vnto this place, ye haue rebelled against the Lorde.

²¹ And I toke your synne, the calfe whyche ye had made & burnt him wt fyre & stamped him & ground him a good, euen vnto smal dust. And I cast the dust therof into the broke that descended out of the mount. ²² Also at Thaberah & at Masah & at the sepulchres of lust ye angred the Lorde, ²³ yea, and when the Lord sent you from Cades Barne saying: go vp & conquere the lande whych I haue geuen you, ye disobeyed the mouth of the Lord your God & neither beleued hym, nor herkened to hys voice. ²⁴ Thus ye haue bene disobedient to the Lord, sence the daye that I knew you.

¹⁶ But oure fathers were proude and hardnecked, so that they folowed not the commaundementes, ¹⁷ and refused to heare, and were not myndefull of the wonders that thou dyddeste for them: but became obstynate & heady in so muche that they turned backe to theyr bondage in theyr disobedience. But thou my God forgauest, and wast gracyous, mercyfull, pacyente, and of greate goodnesse, and forsokest them not. ¹⁸ And thoughe they made a moulten calfe (and sayde: Thys is thy God, that brought the oute of the lande of Egypte) & dyd greate blasphemyes, ¹⁹ yet forsokeste thou them not in the wyldernes, accordynge to thy great mercye. And the cloudye pyler departed not from them on the daye tyme to leade them the way neyther the pyler of fyre in the nyght season, to shewe them lyghte in the waye that they wente. ²⁰ And thou gaueste them thy good spryte to enforme them, & withheldest not thy Manna from theyr mouthe, and gauest them water when they were thyrstye. ²¹ Fortye yeares longe madest thou prouysyon for them in the wyldernesse, so that they lacked nothynge: theyr clothes waxed not olde, and theyr fete swelled not.

¹⁷ Yet for all this they synned agaynste hym, and prouoked the moost hyest in the wyldernes. ¹⁸ They tempted God in their hertes, and requyred meate for their lust. ¹⁹ For they spoke agaynst God, & sayde: yea yea, God shall prepare a table in the wildernesse, shall he? ²⁰ Lo, he smote the stony rocke, that the watery streames gusshed out, and the streames flowed with all: but how can he geue bread and prouyde flesh for hys people? ²¹ When the Lord hearde this, he was wroth so the fyre was kyndled in Iacob, and heauy displeasure agaynst Israel. ²² Because they beleued not in God, & putte not their trust in hys helpe. ²³ So he commaunded the cloudes aboue, & opened the dores of heauen. ²⁴ He rayned doune Manna vpon them for to eate, and gaue them bread from heauen. ²⁵ Then eate they aungels fode, for he sentte them meate ynough. ²⁶ He caused the East wynd to blowe vnder the heauen, & thorow hys power he brought in the South wynde. ²⁷ He made flesh to raine vpon them as thicke as dust, and fethered foules like as the sande of the sea. ²⁸ He let it fall amonge their tentes rounde about theyr habitacions. ²⁹ So they eate, and were fylled, for he gaue them their owne desyre. ³⁰ They were not disapoynted of their lust. But whyle the meate was yet in their mouthes: ³¹ the heuy wrath of God came vpon them, slewe the welthiest of them, & smote doune the chosen men of Israel. ³² But for all this they sinned yet more, and beleued not hys wonderous workes. ³³ Therfore their dayes were consumed in vanyte, and sodenly their yeares were gone. ³⁴ When he slewe them, they sought hym, & turned them early vnto God. ³⁵ They thoughte then that God was theyr succour, and that the hye God was their redemer. ³⁶ Neuerthelesse they dyd but flatter him in their mouthes, and dissembled with hym in their tonges. ³⁷ For their herte was not whole with him, neither continued they in his couenaunt. ³⁸ But he was so mercifull, that he forgaue their misdedes, and destroyed them not. Yea, many a tyme turned he hys wrathe awaye, and wolde not suffre hys whole dyspleasure to aryse. ³⁹ For he considered that they wer but flesh: euen a wynde that passeth awaye, and commeth not agayne. ⁴⁰ O how ofte haue they greued hym in the wyldernesse? How many a tyme haue they prouoked hym in the deserte? ⁴¹ They turned backe, and tempted God, & moued the holy one in Israel. ⁴² They thought not of hys hand, in the day when he delyuered them from the hande of the enemye.

⁸ harden not youre hertes, as when ye prouoked in tyme of temptacion in the wildernes. ⁹ Where your fathers tempted me, proued me, and sawe my workes. ¹⁰ .xl. yeares long was I greued with the generacion, & sayd: they euer erre in their hertes, they verely haue not knowen my wayes. ¹¹ Therfore I sayd vnto them in my wrath, that they should not enter into my rest.

¹³ But within a whyle they forgat his workes, and wold not abyde his councel. ¹⁴ A lust came vpon them in the wildernesse, so that they tempted God in the deserte. ¹⁵ Yet he gaue them their desire, and sent them ynough at their wylles. ¹⁶ They angred Moyses in the tentes, & Aaron the saynct of the Lord. ¹⁷ So the earth opened & swalowed vp Dathan, & couered the congregatyon of Abyram. ¹⁸ The fyre was kyndled in their companie, the flamme brent vp the vngodly. ¹⁹ They made a calfe in Horeb, and worshipped the molten ymage. ²⁰ Thus they turned their glorye into the similitude of a calfe, that eateth hay. ²¹ They forgat God their Sauiour, whyche had done so greate thynges in Egypte. ²² Wonderous workes in the land of Ham and fearful thynges in the read sea. ²³ So he sayde he wuld haue destroyed them had not Moses hys chosen stand before him in that gappe: to turne awaye his wrathfull indignatyon, lest he should destroy them. ²⁴ Yea, they thought scorne of that pleasaunt lande, and gaue no credence vnto hys worde ²⁵ But murmured in their tentes, and herkened not vnto the voyce of the Lord. ²⁶ Then lyft he vp his hand against them to ouerthrowe them in the wildernes. ²⁷ To cast out their sede among the nacions. and to scatter them in the landes. ²⁸ They ioyned them selues vnto Baal Peor and eate the offeringes of the dead. ²⁹ Thus they prouoked him vnto anger with their owne inuencyons, and the plage was great among them.

¹⁰ Now when I had caried them out of the lande of Egipte, and brought them into the wildernesse: ¹¹ I gaue them my commaundementes, and shewed them my lawes, whiche who so kepeth, shall lyue in them. ¹² I gaue them also my holy dayes, to be a token betwixte me and them, and therby know, that I am the Lorde, whiche haloweth them. ¹³ And yet the house of Israel rebelled agaynste me in the wildernesse, they woulde not walcke in my commaundementes, they haue cast awaye my lawes (whiche whoso kepeth, shoulde lyue in them) and my Sabboth dayes haue thy greatly vnhalowed. Then I made me to poure oute my indignacion vpon them, and to consume them in the wyldernesse. ¹⁴ Yet I would not do it, for my names sake: lest it shoulde be dishonoured before the Heathen, from the which I had caried them away. ¹⁵ But I swore vnto them in the wildernesse, that I woulde not byrnge them into the lande, whiche I gaue them, a land that floweth with milck and honye, and is a pleasure of all landes, ¹⁶ and that because they refused my lawes, and walcked not in my commaundementes, but and vnhalowed my Sabbathes, for their herte was gone after their Idoles. ¹⁷ Neuerthelesse myne eye spared them so that I woulde not vtterly slaye them, and consume them in the wyldernes.

²⁵ O ye house of Israell, gaue ye me offeringes and sacrifyces those .xl. yeares long in the wyldernes? ²⁶ yet haue ye set vp tabernacles to your Moloch, and Images of youre Idols, yea, and the starre of youre God Rempha, figures which ye made to worshyppe them.

³⁶ And the same brought them out shewing woundres and signes in Egypte, & in the red sea, and in the wildernes .xl. yeares.

³⁹ to whom our fathers woulde not obey, but cast it from them, and in their hertes turned backe againe into Egipt, ⁴⁰ saiynge vnto Aaron: Make vs Gods to go before vs. For this Moises that broughte vs out of the lande of Egipte, we wote not what is become of him. ⁴¹ And they made a calfe in those dayes, and offred sacrifices, vnto the ymage, and reioysed in the workes of their owne handes. ⁴² Then God turned him selfe, and gaue them vp that they shoulde worship the starres of the skye, as it is written in the boke of the Prophetes. O ye of the house of Israell, gaue ye to me sacrifyces and meate offeringes by the space of .xl. yeare in the wildernes? ⁴³ And ye toke vnto you the tabernacle of Moloch, & the star of your God Remphan, figures which ye made to worshippe them. And I wil translate you beyonde Babylon.

¹ Brethren I would not that ye should be ignoraunte of this, howe that oure fathers were all vnder a cloude, and al passed thorowe the sea, ² and were all baptysed vnder Moyses, in the cloude, and in the sea: ³ and dyd al eate of one spyrytual meate, ⁴ and dyd al drincke of one maner of spyrytual drincke. And they drancke of that spyrytuall rocke that folowed them, which rocke was Christe. ⁵ But in manie of them had God no delite. For they were ouerthrowen in the wyldernes. ⁶ These are ensamples to vs that we should not luste after euyll thinges, as they lusted. ⁷ Neyther be ye worshippers of Images as were some of them accordynge at it is written: The people sate doune to eate and drynke, and rose vp agayne to playe. ⁸ Neyther let vs committe fornicacion as some of them committed fornycacyon, and were destroied in one day .xxiij. thousand. ⁹ Neither let vs tempte Christe as some of them tempted, and were destroyed of serpentes. ¹⁰ Neyther murmure ye as some of them murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

⁷ Wherfore as the holy ghoste sayeth, to daye yf ye shal heare his voice, ⁸ harden not youre hertes, after the rebellion in the day of temptacion in the wyldernes, ⁹ where youre fathers tempted me, proued me, and sawe my workes .xl. yeares longe. ¹⁰ Wherfore I was greued wyth that generacion and sayde. They erre euer in their hertes, they verely haue not knowen my wayes,

¹⁶ For some, when they hearde, rebelled, how be it not al that came out of Egypte vnder Moyses. ¹⁷ But wyth whome was he depleased .xl. yeares? Was he not displeased wyth them that synned, whose carkases were ouerthrowen in the deserte? ¹⁸ To whom sware he, that they should not enter into hys reste, but vnto them that beleued not? ¹⁹ And we se that they could not enter in because of vnbeleue.
