⁹ But I nowe reioyce, not that ye were sory, but that ye so sorowed, that ye repented. For ye sorowed Godlye, so that in nothyng ye were hurt by vs.

¹⁸ For I confesse my wyckednesse, and my synne greueth me.

³ It is better to be sory then to laugh, for when the countenaunce is heauye, the herte is ioyfull.

⁹ And so he sayde: go, and tell thys people: ye shall heare in dede, but ye shall not vnderstande, ye shall playnelye se, & not perceyue. ¹⁰ Harden the hart of thys people, stoppe theyr eares, and shutte theyr eyes, that they se not with theyr eyes, heare not wyth theyr eares, and vnderstande not wyth theyr hertes, and conuerte and be healed. ¹¹ Then spake I: Lorde, howe longe? he aunswered: vntyll the cytyes be vtterlye without inhabytours, and the houses wythoute men, tyll the lande be also desolate, & lye vnbuylded.

¹⁸ Moreouer I hearde Ephraim, that was led awaye captyue, complayne on thys maner: O Lorde, thou haste correcte me, and thy chastening haue I receyued, as an vntamed calfe. Conuerte thou me, and I shalbe conuerted, for thou arte my Lorde God: ¹⁹ Yea as sone as thou turnest me, I shall refourme my self: and when I vnderstande, I shall smyte vpon my thyghe. For verelye I haue committed shamefull thinges: O let my youth beare this reprofe and confusyon. ²⁰ Vpon this complainte, I thoughte thus by my selfe: is not Ephraim my deare sonne? Is he not the chylde, with whom I haue had all myrthe and pastyme? For sence the tyme that I fyrst commened with him, I haue him euer in remembraunce: therfore my verye herte dryueth me vnto hym, gladly and louynglye will I haue mercy vpon him, sayth the Lorde.

¹⁰ Moreouer, vpon the house of Dauid & vpon the cytesins of Ierusalem wil I poure oute the spirite of grace & prayer, so that they shal loke vpon me, whom they haue pearsed: & they shal bewepe him, as men mourne for their onely begotten sonne: yea & be sory for him, as men are sorye for their fyrst childe.

⁷ I saye vnto you, that lykewyse ioye shalbe in heauen ouer one synner, that repenteth, more then ouer nyntye and nyne iust persons whiche nede no repentaunce.

¹⁰ Lykewyse I saye vnto you ioye is made in the presence of the Angels of God ouer one synner that repenteth.

¹⁷ Then he came to hym selfe, and sayed: Howe many hyred seruauntes at my fathers haue breade ynough, and I dye for honger, ¹⁸ I wyll aryse, and go to my father, and will say vnto hym: father I haue synned agaynst heauen and before the, ¹⁹ and am no more worthye to be called thy sonne, make me as one of thy hyred seruauntes. ²⁰ And he arose and wente to his father. And when he was yet a great way of, hys father sawe hym, and had compassyon and ran and fell on hys necke, & kyssed hym. ²¹ And the sonne sayed vnto him: father, I haue synned agaynst heauen in thy syghte, & am no more worthy to be called thy sonne. ²² But hys father sayed to hys seruauntes: brynge forthe that beste garmentes, & put it on hym, and put a rynge on hys hande, & showes on hys fete. ²³ And brynge hyther the fatted caulfe and kyll hym, and let vs eate and be merye: ²⁴ for thys my sonne was dead, and is alyue agayne, he was lost and is nowe founde. And they beganne to be mery.

³² It was mete that we shoulde make merye, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is aliue again and was loste, and is founde.

²¹ wytnessyng both to the Iewes, and also to the Grekes, the repentaunce towarde God and fayth towarde oure Lorde Iesus.

¹² Oure reioysinge is this, the testimony of oure conscience, that in synglenes and Godly purenes, and not in fleshely wysdome, but by the grace of God, we haue had oure conuersation in the worlde, and moste of all to youwardes.

¹⁶ To the one part are we the sauoure of death vnto death. And vnto the other parte are we the lauoure of lyfe vnto lyfe. And who is mete vnto these thynges?

⁶ Neuerthelesse GOD that comforteth the abiect, comforteth vs at the comming of Tytus. ⁷ And not with hys commynge onelye: but also wyth the consolacyon wherewith he was comforted of you. For he tolde vs youre desyre, youre mournyng, youre feruent mynde to me warde, so that I now reioyce the more.

¹⁰ For Godly sorowe causeth repentaunce vnto saluacyon, not to be repented of: when worldlye sorowe causeth death. ¹¹ Beholde, what diligence thys Godlye sorowe that ye toke, hath wroughte in you: yea it caused you to cleare your selues. It caused indignacyon, it caused feare, it caused desyre, it caused a feruent mynde, it caused punyshement. For in all thynges ye haue shewed your selues that ye are cleare in that matter.

⁸ and thoughe I shoulde boste my selfe some what more of oure authoritie which the Lord hath geuen vs to edifye, and not to destroye you, it shoulde not be to my shame. ⁹ This say I, leste I shoulde seme, as thoughe I went about to make you afrayde with letters. ¹⁰ For the Epystles (sayeth he) are sore and stronge, but hys bodely presence is weake, and hys speach rude.

⁸ We can do nothynge agaynste the truth. But for the trueth, ⁹ we are glad when we are weake, & ye strong. Thys also we wyshe for, euen that ye were perfecte. ¹⁰ Therfore wryte I these thinges beynge absente, leste when I am presente I shoulde vse sharpenesse accordynge to the power whiche the Lorde hath geuen me, to edifye, and not to destroye.
