²⁵ whom God had ordained, thro' faith, to be the propitiatory victim by his blood, for the manifestation of his goodness, by patiently passing over their past transgressions: to manifest,

⁴⁷ I declare unto you, he that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

⁵³ but Jesus answer'd, I assure you, except ye eat the flesh of the son of man, and drink his blood, ye will have no life in you. ⁵⁴ he that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. ⁵⁵ for my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. ⁵⁶ he that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. ⁵⁷ as the father who is the source of life hath sent me, and I live by the father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. ⁵⁸ this is that bread which came down from heaven: very different from that manna, which your fathers did eat but died nevertheless: he that eateth of this bread, shall live for ever.

²³ him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by means of the wicked, have crucified and slain: whom God hath raised up,

¹⁸ but thus it is that God has accomplished what he had foretold by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer.

²⁸ to effect what thy power and thy wisdom pre-determined to be done.

³⁸ know then, my brethren, it is by him, that the remission of sins is offer'd to you: ³⁹ by him, every one who believes, is purged from all that guilt, for which the law of Moses had made no such provision.

¹⁸ he that does all these things, is the Lord himself that has said it." for the works of God are all known to him from the beginning of the world.

³⁰ God has been pleas'd to over-look this state of ignorance: but now he enjoins all men every where to repent:

⁴ or do you despise the riches of his kindness, and forbearance, and long-suffering; not considering that the kindness of God invites you to repentance?

²³ for all having sinned, all have forfeited eternal glory: ²⁴ being justified by his unmerited favour through the redemption that is by Jesus Christ:

²⁶ I say, his goodness at this time: that he might appear to be just, and the justifier of him who believes in Jesus.

¹ How then can we assert, "that Abraham our father obtained this from circumcision?" ² for if Abraham was justified by works, he had matter of pretension, whereas he had no such claim from God. ³ for what saith the scripture? "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness." ⁴ the reward is not counted as a favour to him that has done good actions, but as a debt: ⁵ whereas he that trusts in God to be made righteous, tho' he has not done such actions, shall find his faith accounted as righteousness. ⁶ even as David also speaks of the happiness of the man whom God accounted righteous independently of his works, ⁷ " happy are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. ⁸ happy is the man to whom the Lord will not account sin."

¹ Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ,

⁹ much more then being now justified by his blood, shall we thro' him be delivered from the wrath to come.

¹¹ and not only so, but we have present joy in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now obtained the reconciliation.

²⁰ and having made peace by the blood of his cross, to reconcile all things to himself, both those in heaven, and those upon earth. ²¹ You then that formerly were alienated from God, and were enemies by your imaginations and wicked practices, even you has Jesus Christ now reconciled to the body of his church, ²² through his own death, to present you holy, and unblameable, and unreproveable in his own sight: ²³ provided you continue well-grounded and settled in the faith, and do not abandon that hope which has been offer'd to you by the gospel, and is proclaim'd to all mankind; of which I Paul am made a minister.

¹⁵ it is a proposition worthy to be believ'd, and be embrac'd by all, that Jesus Christ is come into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the greatest.

⁵ over the ark were the cherubims of glory covering the propitiatory with their wings, of which we cannot now enter into a particular detail.

¹⁴ how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the holy spirit offered himself a spotless victim to God, purify our souls from deadly sins, to serve the living God? ¹⁵ and for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that, the transgressions that were unexpiated by the first testament, being expiated by his death, they who are called might receive the eternal inheritance, which was promised. ¹⁶ For where a testament is, there the death of the testator is necessarily pre-suppos'd. ¹⁷ because a testament has no effect till after the demise: it not being in force while the testator is alive. ¹⁸ whence even the first testament was not established without the effusion of blood. ¹⁹ for when every precept of the law had been represented by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, wool of a scarlet dye, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book of the law and all the people, ²⁰ saying, "this is the blood of the testament which God has made in your behalf." ²¹ he sprinkled likewise the tabernacle with blood, and all the vessels used in divine service. ²² and indeed according to the law almost every thing is purified with blood, without the effusion of which, there is no remission of sins.

²⁵ nor to make a frequent offering of himself, as the high priest every year enters into the holy of holies with other blood than his own. ²⁶ for then must he have suffered several times since the beginning of the world, when in the consummation of the ages, he has appeared once for all to expiate sin by offering himself as a sacrifice.

⁴ And indeed it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats, should take away the guilt of sin.

¹⁹ Wherefore, my brethren, since by virtue of the blood of Jesus we have the liberty of entring into the holy of holies, ²⁰ by a new and living way which he has first open'd for us, thro' the veil, that is, thro' his flesh;

⁷ 'Twas by faith that Noah being divinely warned of unforeseen events, with a religious concern built an ark to the preservation of his family; whereby the world became inexcusable, and he obtained the reward of that righteousness which is by faith.

¹⁴ for they. that make such a declaration, show plainly that they seek some other country.

¹⁷ 'Twas by faith that Abraham, when put to the trial, offered up Isaac: HE offered up his darling son, to whose posterity the promises were to be made good:

³⁹ Tho' these were all celebrated for their faith, they did not receive the reward that was promised: ⁴⁰ because God out of his distinguishing kindness to us, would not let them arrive before us to the enjoyment of perfect felicity.

¹⁸ considering, that it was not by such perishable things as silver or gold, that you were releas'd from those vain rites and customs impos'd upon you by your fathers, ¹⁹ but by the precious blood of Christ, who is the lamb without spot, and without blemish: ²⁰ who was destin'd before the creation of the world, tho' 'tis of late only that he has appear'd, upon your account:

¹⁰ if we say that we have not sinned, we impeach his veracity, and discredit his word.

² he is the the victim that has expiated our sins: and not ours only, but likewise the sins of the whole world.

¹⁰ and what heightens his love, was this, that it was not we who first loved God, but it was he that first loved us, and sent his son to expiate our sins.

⁹ and they sung a new song, saying, "thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every tribe, and language, and people, and nation;

⁸ all that dwell upon the earth will worship him, whose names are not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the lamb, that was slain.

¹⁵ and whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.
