¹ The kingdom of the Messiah will then be such, as when ten virgins took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom.

² and saying, "Repent ye: for the kingdom of the Messiah draws nigh."

¹⁶ even so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father who is in heaven.

¹⁵ Jesus answer'd them, can the bride-men mourn, while the bridegroom is with them? the day indeed will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then will be the time to fast.

²⁴ Another parable he propos'd to them in these words. the state of the gospel in this world may be compar'd to a man who sowed good grain in his field:

³¹ He propos'd another parable to them, which was this; the gospel-state is like a grain of mustard-seed which a man took to sow in his field.

³⁸ the field is the world: the good seed are the children of the kingdom: but the tares are the children of the wicked one:

⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hid in a field: a man finds this treasure and buries it again, then goes in great joy, sells all that he hath, and purchases that field. ⁴⁵ Again, the heavenly kingdom is like a merchant-man, who is in quest of curious pearls:

⁴⁷ Again, the gospel-kingdom is like a net that is cast into the sea, and draws all sorts of fish:

¹ For the kingdom of the Messiah is like a family, the master whereof went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard.

² the kingdom of the Messiah is such, as when a certain king made a wedding-feast for his son.

⁴² watch therefore, for ye know not at what hour your Lord shall come. ⁴³ but this you conceive, that if a man knew at what hour of the night the thief would come, he would set a watch, and not suffer his house to be broke open. ⁴⁴ therefore be ye also prepar'd: for the son of man may come at an hour you least expect. ⁴⁵ If then there be a servant, appointed by his master to take care of his family, who faithfully and prudently distributes their allowance according to the establishment: happy is the servant, ⁴⁶ who shall be found so employed, at his master's return. ⁴⁷ I tell you, he shall make him steward of all his estate. ⁴⁸ but if he be dishonest, and says to himself, my Lord delays coming, ⁴⁹ and shall pretend to assault his fellow-servants, and spend his time with sots: ⁵⁰ the master of that servant will come in a day when he least expects it, and at an hour he is not aware of; ⁵¹ and shall turn him out of the family, and give him the reward due to such behaviour: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¹⁹ Jesus answered, can the bridemen fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. ²⁰ but the time will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast.

³⁴ to which he answered, would you have the bridemen fast, while the bridegroom is with them? ³⁵ however, the time will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they will have occasions enow of fasting.

³⁵ Let your loins be girt, and your lamps burning: ³⁶ imitate those servants who stand waiting for their master's return from the wedding, to let him in as soon as he comes to the door.

³⁴ set a guard upon yourselves, that ye be not stupified by surfeiting and drunkenness, or by the disquietudes of this life, and so that day come upon you with a surprize. ³⁵ for like a snare, it shall surprize all the inhabitants of the earth. ³⁶ be therefore upon your guard, be constant in prayer, that you may be accounted worthy to escape all those future ills, and be able to stand in the presence of the son of God.

²⁹ the bridegroom is he that hath a right to the bride: as for the friend of the bridegroom, who is nigh his person and heareth him, he greatly rejoyces at the voice of the bridegroom: upon this account my joy is compleat.

⁸ in the upper chamber where we were assembled, several lamps were burning:

² now I commend you, brethren, for remembring all my orders, and for keeping the rules I delivered to you.

² for I am jealous over you with religious jealousy: since I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

²⁵ You husband, love your spouse, even as Christ loved the church, and laid down his life for her: ²⁶ to sanctify and purify her by the ablution of his word, ²⁷ that he himself might make her appear illustrious to his own eye, a church without spot, or any thing like a defect; so as to be holy and irreprehensible. ²⁸ in like manner ought men to love their wives, as their own bodies: "he that loves his wife, loveth himself." ²⁹ no man was ever yet averse to his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, as the Lord doth the church: ³⁰ of which we are the several parts constituting his body. ³¹ the scripture says, "for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be united to his wife, and they two shall be as one." ³² these words contain a very mystical sense, I mean in reference to Christ and the church. ³³ wherefore let every one of you without exception, love his wife even as himself; and let the wife respect her husband.

¹⁵ that you may be without reproach, the inoffensive spotless children of God in the midst of a depraved and perverse generation (among whom you should shine as stars in the world, ¹⁶ you, who display the doctrine of eternal life) that in the day of Christ I may have the satisfaction of not having pursued my laborious course in vain.

⁸ I have nothing more to do, but to receive the crown of virtue reserv'd for me, which the Lord, the just judge, will give me in that day: and not only to me, but to those also, who have long'd for his appearance.

¹³ in expectation of that desirable happiness, the glorious appearance of the supreme God, and of our saviour Jesus Christ,

¹³ whilst I am alive, I think it my duty to awaken you by my admonitions: ¹⁴ knowing that I must soon leave this tabernacle, as our Lord Jesus Christ has signify'd to me. ¹⁵ However, I shall inculcate these things so as to make you continually remember them, even after my departure.

¹² expecting, and vehemently desiring the day of the Lord would come, when the heavens all on fire shall be dissolv'd, and the elements shall melt with intense heat. ¹³ As for us, in consequence of his promise, we expect a new heaven, and a new earth, where justice shall reside.

⁵ out of the throne proceeded lightnings, and thundrings, and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.

⁴ these are they who were not defiled with women: for they are virgins: these are they who follow the lamb wherever he goes: these were ransom'd from among men, being the first fruits unto God, and to the lamb.

⁷ let us rejoyce, and triumph, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the lamb is come, and his spouse is already adorn'd.

² and I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, descend from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

⁹ Then there came to me one of the seven angels, who had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, "come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the lamb's wife."
