² and having found that the stone had been remov'd from the sepulchre, they entred in,

⁶⁰ and laid it in a monument which he had lately caused to be hewn out in the rock: and having rolled a large stone to the door of the sepulchre, he went away. ⁶¹ in the mean time Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary were sitting over against the sepulchre. ⁶² Now the next day after the preparation of the sabbath, the chief priests and Pharisees went together to Pilate, ⁶³ saying, sir, we remember that this impostor, when he was alive, said, "after three days I will rise again." ⁶⁴ pray therefore order a guard to be posted at the sepulchre till the third day, for fear his disciples should come and steal him away, and then tell the people, "he is risen from the dead:" for this last imposture would be of worse consequence than the first. ⁶⁵ to whom Pilate replied, you have a guard, go then, and make it as secure as you can. ⁶⁶ accordingly they went, and having clapt a seal upon the stone, they posted a guard to secure the sepulchre.

² now there had been a great earthquake; for an angel of the lord descending from heaven, was come, and had rolled away the stone from the door, and was sitting upon it.

⁴⁶ who taking down the body, wrapped it in a fine linnen cloth, which he had bought, and laid it in a sepulchre, which was hewn out of a rock, and roll'd a stone for a door to the sepulchre: and Mary Magdalene, ⁴⁷ and Mary the mother of Joses, took notice where he was laid.

³ and they said to one another, who will remove the stone from the mouth of the sepulchre for us? ⁴ (for it was very great.) but when they were near in view, they perceiv'd that the stone was roll'd away.

¹ The first day of the week early in morning Mary Magdalene, when it was yet dusky, came to the sepulchre, and found the stone was taken away from the sepulchre. ² upon this she went in great haste to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, they have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
