Exodus 20:18-19

18 And all the people saw the thunder and the lightning and the noise of the horn, and how the mountain smoked. 19 And when the people saw it, they removed and stood afar off and said unto Moses, "Talk thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God talk with us, lest we die."

Hebrews 12:18-21

18 For ye are not come unto the mount that can be touched, and unto burning fire, nor yet to mist and darkness and tempest of weather, 19 neither unto the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words: which voice they that heard it, wished away, that the communication should not be spoken to them. 20 For they were not able to abide that which was spoken. If a beast had touched the mountain, it must have been stoned, or thrust through with a dart: 21 even so terrible was the sight which appeared. Moses said, "I fear and quake."
