¹⁴ I will be his father and he shall be my son; insomuch that if he sin, I will but rebuke him with such a rod as men be rebuked with and with such plagues as the children of men be plagued with.

⁵ Understand, therefore, in thine heart, that as a man nurtureth his son, even so the LORD thy God nurtureth thee.

²⁰ I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him. ²¹ My hand shall hold him fast, and mine arm shall strengthen him. ²² The enemy shall not overcome him, and the son of wickedness shall not hurt him. ²³ I shall smite down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him. ²⁴ My truth also and my mercy shall be with him; and in my name shall his horn be exalted. ²⁵ I will set his hand in the sea, and his righthand in the floods. ²⁶ He shall call me, "Thou art my father, my God, and the strength of my salvation.' ²⁷ And I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. ²⁸ My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. ²⁹ His seed also will I make to endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven. ³⁰ But if his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments, ³¹ if they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments, ³² I will visit their offenses with the rod, and their sins with scourges. ³³ Nevertheless, my loving-kindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my truth to fail. ³⁴ My covenant will I not break, nor disannull the thing that is gone out of my lips. ³⁵ I have sworn once by my holiness, that I will not fail David. ³⁶ His seed shall endure forever, and his throne is like as the sun before me. ³⁷ He shall stand fast for evermore as the moon, and as the faithful witness in heaven." ¹² Blessed is the man, whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him in thy law, ¹³ that thou mayest give him patience in time of adversity, until the pit be digged up for the ungodly.

¹¹ My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD, neither faint when thou are rebuked of him. ¹² For whom the LORD loveth, him he chasteneth: and yet delighteth in him even as a father in his own son.

¹¹ For I am with thee, to help thee, sayeth the LORD. And though I shall destroy all the people among whom I have scattered thee, yet will I not destroy thee, but correct thee, and that with discretion. For I know, that thou art in no wise without fault.

¹⁷ And, lo, there came a voice from heaven, saying, "This is that, my beloved son, in whom is my delight."

³² But when we are judged of the Lord we are chastened, because we should not be damned with the world.

⁵ For unto which of the angels said he at any time, "Thou art my son, this day begat I thee?" And again, "I will be his father, and he shall be my son."

⁵ And ye have forgotten the consolation which speaketh unto you, as unto children, "My son despise not the chastening of the Lord, neither faint when thou art rebuked of him: ⁶ For whom the Lord loveth, him he chasteneth: yea, and he scourgeth every son that he receiveth." ⁷ If ye shall endure chastening, God offereth himself unto you, as unto sons. What son is that whom the father chasteneth not? ⁸ If ye be not under correction — whereof all are partakers — then are ye bastards and not sons. ⁹ Moreover, seeing we had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: should we not much rather be in subjection unto the father of spiritual gifts that we might live? ¹⁰ And they verily for a few days nurtured us after their own pleasure; but he learneth us unto that which is profitable, that we might receive of his holiness. ¹¹ No manner chastising for the present time seemeth to be joyous, but grievous; nevertheless, afterward it bringeth the quiet fruit of righteousness unto them which are therein exercised.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Be fervent therefore and repent.
