¹¹ Dishonest wealth will dwindle, but what is earned through hard work will be multiplied.

²⁸ he will dwell in ruined cities, in abandoned houses destined to become rubble. ²⁹ He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not endure. His possessions will not overspread the land.

¹⁶ Though he heaps up silver like dust and piles up a wardrobe like clay, ¹⁷ what he lays up, the righteous will wear, and his silver will be divided by the innocent.

² For when you eat the fruit of your labor, blessings and prosperity will be yours.

² Ill-gotten treasures profit nothing, but righteousness brings deliverance from death.

²² A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is passed to the righteous. ²³ Abundant food is in the fallow ground of the poor, but without justice it is swept away.

²¹ An inheritance gained quickly will not be blessed in the end.

²³ Be sure to know the state of your flocks, and pay close attention to your herds; ²⁴ for riches are not forever, nor does a crown endure to every generation. ²⁵ When hay is removed and new growth appears and the grain from the hills is gathered, ²⁶ the lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats with the price of a field. ²⁷ You will have plenty of goats’ milk to feed you—food for your household and nourishment for your maidservants.

⁸ He who increases his wealth by interest and usury lays it up for one who is kind to the poor.

²⁰ A faithful man will abound with blessings, but one eager to be rich will not go unpunished.

²² A stingy man hastens after wealth and does not know that poverty awaits him.

¹⁴ or wealth lost in a failed venture, so when that man has a son there is nothing to pass on.

¹¹ Like a partridge hatching eggs it did not lay is the man who makes a fortune unjustly. In the middle of his days his riches will desert him, and in the end he will be the fool.”

⁶ Will not all of these take up a taunt against him, speaking with mockery and derision: ‘Woe to him who amasses what is not his and makes himself rich with many loans! How long will this go on?’ ⁷ Will not your creditors suddenly arise and those who disturb you awaken? Then you will become their prey.

¹ Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail over the misery to come upon you. ² Your riches have rotted and moths have eaten your clothes. ³ Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days. ⁴ Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. ⁵ You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts as in the day of slaughter.
