⁷ And on the tenth day of this seventh month you* will have a holy convocation and you* will afflict your* souls. You* will do no manner of work.

²⁹ And it will be an everlasting statute to you*. In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you* will afflict your* souls and will do no manner of work, the home-born, or the stranger who travels among you*. ³⁰ For on this day atonement will be made for you*, to cleanse you*. You* will be clean from all your* sins before Jehovah. ³¹ It is a Sabbath of solemn rest to you* and you* will afflict your* souls. It is an everlasting statute.

²⁶ And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁷ However on the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement. It will be a holy convocation to you* and you* will afflict your* souls and you* will offer an offering made by fire to Jehovah. ²⁸ And you* will do no manner of work in that same day, for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement for you* before Jehovah your* God. ²⁹ For whatever soul it is who will not be afflicted in that same day, he will be cut off from his people. ³⁰ And whatever soul it is who does any manner of work in that same day, that soul I will destroy from among his people. ³¹ You* will do no manner of work. It is an everlasting statute throughout your* genealogy in all your* dwellings. ³² It will be to you* a Sabbath of solemn rest and you* will afflict your* souls. In the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you* will keep your* Sabbath.

²¹ Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek of him a straight way for us and for our little ones and for all our substance.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick my clothing was sackcloth. I afflicted my soul with fasting and my prayer returned into my own bosom.

⁵ Those who sow in tears will reap in joy. ⁶ He who goes forth and weeps, bearing seed for sowing, will doubtless come again with joy, bringing his sheaves.

¹² And in that day the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, called for weeping and for mourning and for baldness and for girding with sackcloth.

³ Why have we fasted, they say and you do not see? We have afflicted our soul and you take no knowledge. Behold, in the day of your* fast you* find pleasure and exact from all your* laborers. ⁴ Behold, you* fast for strife and contention and to kill* with the fist of wickedness. You* do not fast this day so as to make your* voice to be heard on high.
⁵ Is such the fast that I have chosen, the day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a rush and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast and an acceptable day to Jehovah?

³ and to speak to the priests of the house of Jehovah of hosts and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?

¹⁰ And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication. And they will look to me whom they have pierced. And they will mourn for him, as a man mourns for his only son and will be in bitterness for him, as a man who is in bitterness for his firstborn.

⁴ Those who are mourning are fortunate, because they will be comforted.

³ I am saying to you, No, but, if you do not repent, you will all likewise perish.

⁹ Now when a considerable amount of time had elapsed and the voyage was already dangerous, because the Fast had already passed, Paul was advising them,

⁶ Knowing this, that our old man was crucified together with him, in order that the body of sin might be done-away, that we are to be enslaved to sin no longer;

²⁷ but I am buffeting my body and enslaving it; lest somehow after having preached to others, I myself might become unapproved.

⁹ I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, in order that you might suffer-damage in nothing from us. ¹⁰ For the sorrow which is according to the will of God is working unregrettable repentance for salvation, but the sorrow of the world is working death. ¹¹ For behold how much diligence this same thing, (your being sorrowful according to the will of God), has worked in you : but what a defense, but what indignation, but what fear, but what longing, but what zeal, but what vengeance! In everything you commended yourselves to be pure in the matter.

⁸ Draw near to God and he will be drawing near to you. Cleanse your hands sinners and purify your hearts you indecisive! ⁹ Be miserable and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy be turned to gloom. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and he will be exalting you.
