²³ Now therefore, he said, put away the foreign gods which are among you* and incline your* heart to Jehovah, the God of Israel.

² Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, Put away the foreign gods that are among you* and purify yourselves and change your* garments. ³ And let us arise and go up to Bethel and I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and was with me on the way which I went. ⁴ And they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hand and the rings which were in their ears. And Jacob hid them under the oak that was by Shechem.

²³ You* will not make other gods with me; gods of silver, or gods of gold, you* will not make to you*.

¹⁴ Now therefore fear Jehovah and serve him in sincerity and in truth. And put away the gods which your* fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt and serve you* Jehovah.

¹⁵ And the sons of Israel said to Jehovah, We have sinned. Do to us whatever seems good to you, please only deliver us this day. ¹⁶ And they put away the foreign gods from among them and served Jehovah. And his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

³ And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, If you* do return to Jehovah with all your* heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you* and direct your* hearts to Jehovah and serve him only. And he will deliver you* out of the hand of the Philistines. ⁴ Then the sons of Israel did put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth and served Jehovah only.

⁵⁸ that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his ordinances, which he commanded our fathers.

³⁶ Incline my heart to your testimonies and not to covetousness.

⁴ Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, to practice deeds of wickedness with men who work wickedness. And do not let me eat of their dainties.

² so as to incline your ear to wisdom and apply your heart to understanding,

² Take with you* words and return to Jehovah. Say to him, Take away all iniquity and accept what is good. So we will render as bullocks the offering of our lips. ³ Assyria will not save us. We will not ride upon horses, nor will we say any more to the work of our hands, Our gods. For in you the fatherless finds mercy.

⁸ Ephraim will say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have answered and will regard him. I am like a green fir tree. From me, your fruit is found.

¹⁹ Then what am I saying? That an idol is anything, or that an idol-sacrifice is anything? ²⁰ But I am saying, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they are sacrificing to demons, and not to God, and I do not wish you to become partners of demons.
²¹ You are not able to drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You are not able to partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons.

¹⁶ And what alliance has a temple of God with idols? For you are a temple of the living God; just-as God said, ‘I will be dwelling among them and will be walking among them, and I will be their God and they will be a people to me.’ ¹⁷ Hence ‘Come out from the midst of them and be separate,’says the Lord, ‘And touch no unclean thing, and I will accept you\super\'b0 ¹⁸ and will be a Father to you and you will be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.’

²⁸ Hence, receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us have gratitude, through which we give-divine service in ways well pleasing to God, with reverence and piety; ²⁹ for our God is also a consuming fire.
