⁴ her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she is defiled. For that is abomination before Jehovah and you will not cause the land to sin, which Jehovah your God gives you for an inheritance.

²⁴ Do not defile you* yourselves in any of these things. For in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out from before you*, ²⁵ and the land is defiled. Therefore I visit the iniquity of it upon it and the land vomits out its inhabitants.
²⁶ You* therefore will keep my statutes and my ordinances and will not do any of these abominations, neither the home-born, nor the stranger that travels among you*, ²⁷ (for all these abominations the men of the land have done, who were before you* and the land is defiled), ²⁸ that the land not vomit you* out also, when you* defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you*.

¹⁷ Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although there came a plague upon the congregation of Jehovah, ¹⁸ that you* must turn away this day from following Jehovah? And it will be, seeing you* rebel today against Jehovah, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
