¹⁰ Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him in front and behind, he chose from all the choice men of Israel and put them in array against the Syrians.

²² And the others came forth out of the city against them, so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side and some on that side. And they killed* them so that they let none of them remain or escape.

⁴² Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel to the way of the wilderness. But the battle followed hard after them and those who came out of the cities destroyed them in the midst of it. ⁴³ They enclosed the Benjamites all around, and chased them, and trod them down at their resting-place, as far as opposite Gibeah toward the sunrise.

¹¹ And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then you will help me, but if the sons of Ammon be too strong for you, then I will come and help you. ¹² Be of good courage and let us play the man on behalf of our people and the cities of our God. And Jehovah do what seems good to him.
¹³ So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to the battle against the Syrians. And they fled before him. ¹⁴ And when the sons of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the sons of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.
