⁷ And you shall have a holy convocation on the tenth of this seventh month. And you shall afflict your souls. You shall not do any work.

²⁹ And it shall be a statute forever to you: in the seventh month, on the tenth of the month, you shall afflict your souls and do no work at all, the native and the alien who is staying among you. ³⁰ For on that day an atonement shall be made for you, to cleanse you, so that you may be clean from all your sins before Jehovah. ³¹ It shall be a sabbath of rest to you, and you shall afflict your souls, by a statute forever.

²⁶ And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁷ Also, on the tenth of this seventh month, this is a day of atonement. It shall be a holy convocation to you. And you shall afflict your souls and offer a fire offering to Jehovah. ²⁸ And you shall do no work in that same day, for it is a day of atonement, in order to make an atonement for you before Jehovah your God. ²⁹ For any soul who is not humbled in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. ³⁰ And any soul who does any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people. ³¹ You shall do no kind of work. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. ³² It shall be to you a sabbath of rest, and you shall humble your souls. In the ninth of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall keep your sabbath.

²¹ Then I called a fast there at the river Ahava, so that we might humble ourselves before our God, in order to seek from Him a right way for us and for our little ones, and for all our goods.

¹³ But when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fastings; and my prayer returned into my own bosom.

⁵ Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy. ⁶ He who goes forth and weeps, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

¹² And in that day Jehovah of Hosts called to weeping and mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth.

³ They say, Why have we fasted, and You do not see? Why have we afflicted our soul, and You take no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and crush all your laborers. ⁴ Behold, you fast for strife and debate, and to strike with the fist of wickedness; you shall not fast as you do today, to make your voice to be heard on high. ⁵ Is it such a fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast and a day pleasing to Jehovah?

³ to speak to the priests who belong to the house of Jehovah of Hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, consecrating myself, as I have done these many years?

¹⁰ And I will pour on the house of David, and on the people of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of prayers. And they shall look on Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be bitter over Him, as the bitterness over the first-born.

⁴ Blessed are they that mourn! For they shall be comforted.

⁹ And much time having been used up, and the voyage already being dangerous, because the Fast was now already past, Paul warned them,

⁶ knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be destroyed, that from now on we should not serve sin.

²⁷ But I buffet my body, and lead it captive, lest proclaiming to others I myself might be rejected.

⁹ Now I rejoice, not that you were grieved, but that you grieved to repentance. For you were grieved according to God, so that you might suffer loss by nothing in us. ¹⁰ For the grief according to God works repentance to salvation, not to be regretted, but the grief of the world works out death. ¹¹ For behold this same thing (you being grieved according to God); how much it worked out earnestness in you; but also defense; but also indignation; but also fear; but also desire; but also zeal; but also vengeance! In everything you approved yourselves to be clear in the matter.

⁸ Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners; and purify your hearts, double-minded ones. ⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness. ¹⁰ Be humbled before the Lord, and He will lift you up.
