³⁰ And we swore that we would not give our daughters to the people of the land nor take their daughters for our sons.

¹⁶ and lest you take from their daughters for your sons, and their daughters go whoring after their gods and make your sons go whoring after their gods.

³ Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to his son, nor shall you take his daughter to your son.

¹ And at the end of these things, the rulers came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands. But they are doing according to their abominations, those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. ² For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons. So the holy seed has mixed themselves with the people of those lands. Yes, the hand of the leaders and overseers has been chief in this sin. ³ And when I heard this thing, I tore my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down stricken dumb.

¹² And now do not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth forever, so that you may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your sons forever. ¹³ And after all that has come on us for our evil deeds and for our great sin, since You our God have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such an escape as this, ¹⁴ should we again break Your commandments and join hands with the people of these abominations? Would You not be angry with us until You had crushed us, until there is no remnant nor survivor?

¹⁰ And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, You have sinned, and have taken strange women to increase the sin of Israel. ¹¹ And now confess to Jehovah, the God of your fathers, and do His pleasure. And separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange women. ¹² Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As you have said, so we must do.
