¹ But the sons of Israel committed a sin in the cursed thing. For Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the thing which was cursed. And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the sons of Israel.

¹⁷ And the city shall be devoted to Jehovah, it and all in it. Only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent. ¹⁸ And you surely shall keep clear of the cursed thing, lest you make yourselves cursed when you take of the cursed things, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.

²⁰ And Achan answered Joshua and said, Indeed I have sinned against Jehovah, the God of Israel, and this I have done. ²¹ When I saw among the spoil a goodly robe of Shinar, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, I coveted them and took them. And behold, they are hidden in the earth in the middle of my tent, and the silver under it.

¹⁶ So says all the congregation of Jehovah: What trespass is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away today from following Jehovah, in that you have built an altar for you so that you might rebel this day against Jehovah?

¹⁸ But must you turn away today from following Jehovah? It shall be, you rebel today against Jehovah, and tomorrow He will be angry with all the congregation of Israel.

²⁰ Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a sin in the cursed thing, and did not wrath fall on all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.

¹ And again the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and He moved David against them to say, Go count Israel and Judah.

⁶ And the sons of Zerah were Zimri, and Ethan, and Heman, and Calcol, and Dara, all of them five. ⁷ And the sons of Carmi: Achan, the troubler of Israel, who sinned in the cursed thing.

⁷ And it was evil in the eyes of God as to this thing. And He struck Israel.

¹⁸ And they left the house of Jehovah, the God of their fathers, and served Asherahs and idols. And wrath came on Judah and Jerusalem for this their guilt.

⁶ And I said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to You, my God. For our iniquities have increased over our heads, and our guiltiness has grown up to the heavens.

¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroys much good.

⁷ O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us the shame of our faces, as it is today to the men of Judah and to the people of Jerusalem, and to all Israel who are near and who are afar off, through all the countries where You have driven them because of their sin which they have sinned against You.

⁷ And they said, each one to his fellow, Come and let us cast lots, so that we may know who has caused this evil to occur to us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

¹ On the whole it is reported that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not even named among the nations, so as one to have his father's wife. ² And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, so that he who has done this deed may be taken from your midst. ³ For as being absent in body but present in spirit, I indeed have judged already as though I were present concerning him who worked out this thing; ⁴ in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, with my spirit; also, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ; ⁵ to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. ⁶ Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

¹⁵ looking diligently lest any fail of the grace of God, or lest any root of bitterness springing up disturb you, and by it many are defiled, ¹⁶ (lest there be any fornicator, or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.
