²³ And now put away the strange gods among you, and incline your heart to Jehovah, the God of Israel.

² Then Jacob said to his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods among you, and be clean, and change your garments. ³ And let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. ⁴ And they gave all the strange gods which were in their hands to Jacob, and the earrings in their ears. And Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

²³ You shall not make with Me gods of silver, neither shall you make to you gods of gold.

¹⁴ Now, then, fear Jehovah, and serve Him in sincerity and truth. And put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt, and serve Jehovah.

¹⁵ And the sons of Israel said to Jehovah, We have sinned. Do You to us whatever is good in Your eyes; only deliver us, we pray You, today. ¹⁶ And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served Jehovah. And His soul was moved by the misery of Israel.

³ And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel saying, If you return to Jehovah with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts to Jehovah, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines. ⁴ And the sons of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and served Jehovah only.

⁵⁸ to incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments which He commanded our fathers.

⁸ Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him and watched him; I am like a green fir tree. Your fruit is found from Me.

¹⁹ What then do I say? That the idol is anything, or that an idolatrous sacrifice is anything? ²⁰ But I say that the things which the nations sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. And I do not desire that you should have fellowship with demons. ²¹ You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot be partakers of the Lord's table and of a table of demons.

¹⁶ And what agreement does a temple of God have with idols? For you are the temple of the living God, as God has said, "I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." ¹⁷ Therefore come out from among them and be separated, says the Lord, and do not touch the unclean thing. And I will receive you ¹⁸ and I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.

²⁸ Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear, ²⁹ for also, "Our God is a consuming fire."
