¹⁸ And about the time of forty years He tenderly bore them in the wilderness.

² And the whole congregation of the sons of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

³⁵ And the sons of Israel ate manna forty years, until they came to a land in which people lived. They ate manna until they came into the borders of the land of Canaan.

²² Because all those men who have seen My glory and My miracles which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted Me now these ten times, and have not listened to My voice,

³³ And your sons shall feed in the wilderness forty years and bear your fornications, until your dead bodies have wasted in the wilderness. ³⁴ According to the number of the days in which you searched the land, forty days, each day for a year you shall bear your iniquities, forty years; and you shall know My alienation.

³¹ and in the wilderness where you have seen how Jehovah your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came into this place.

⁷ Remember, and do not forget, how you provoked Jehovah your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day you departed out of the land of Egypt, until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Jehovah.

²¹ And I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire, and stamped it, grinding it very small, until it was as small as dust. And I threw the dust of it into the torrent that descended out of the mountain. ²² And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at the Graves of Lust, you provoked Jehovah to anger. ²³ And when Jehovah sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying: Go up and possess the land which I have given you, then you rebelled against the commandment of Jehovah your God, and you did not believe Him, nor listened to His voice. ²⁴ You have been rebellious against Jehovah from the day that I knew you.

¹⁶ But they and our fathers acted proudly and hardened their necks, and did not listen to Your commandments. ¹⁷ And they refused to obey, neither were they mindful of Your wonders which You did among them. But they hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But You are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and did not forsake them. ¹⁸ Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt, and had worked great blasphemies, ¹⁹ yet You in Your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of the cloud did not depart from them by day to lead them in the way, nor the pillar of fire by night, to show them light and the way in which they should go. ²⁰ You also gave Your good Spirit to teach them, and did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst. ²¹ And forty years You sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing; their clothes did not become old, and their feet did not swell.

¹⁷ And they sinned still more against Him, by provoking the Most High in the wilderness. ¹⁸ And they tempted God in their heart by asking food for their lust. ¹⁹ And they spoke against God; they said, Can God set a table in the wilderness? ²⁰ Behold! He struck the rock so that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed. Can He also give bread? Can He provide flesh for His people? ²¹ Therefore Jehovah heard, and was made furious; so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel, ²² because they did not believe in God, and did not trust in His salvation; ²³ though He had commanded the clouds from above, and had opened the doors of the heavens; ²⁴ and had rained down manna on them to eat, and He gave them of the grain of the heavens. ²⁵ Man ate the food of the mighty; He sent them meat to the full. ²⁶ He caused an east wind to blow in the sky; and by His power He brought in the south wind. ²⁷ and He also rained flesh on them like dust, and winged birds like the sand of the sea; ²⁸ and He let them fall in the middle of their camp, all around their tents. ²⁹ So they ate, and were filled to the full; for He gave them their own desire. ³⁰ They were not turned away from their lust, but while their food was still in their mouths, ³¹ the wrath of God came on them and killed the fattest of them, and struck down the chosen of Israel. ³² For all this they still sinned, and did not believe because of His wonderful works. ³³ Therefore He ended their days in vanity and their years in trouble. ³⁴ When He killed them, then they looked for Him; and they turned back and sought after God. ³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock, and the Most High God was their redeemer. ³⁶ But they flattered Him with their mouths, and they lied to Him with their tongues. ³⁷ For their heart was not right with Him, neither were they faithful in His covenant. ³⁸ But He, full of pity, forgave their iniquity, and did not destroy them; yea, many times He turned His anger away, and did not stir up all His wrath. ³⁹ For He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes away and does not come again. ⁴⁰ How often they provoked Him in the wilderness, and grieved Him in the desert! ⁴¹ Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and pained the Holy One of Israel. ⁴² They did not remember His hand, the day when He delivered them from the enemy;

⁸ harden not your heart, as in the day of strife, as in the day of testing in the wilderness; ⁹ when your fathers tempted Me, tested Me, and saw My work. ¹⁰ For forty years I was grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people who go astray in their hearts, and they have not known My ways; ¹¹ to whom I swore in My wrath that they should not enter into My rest.

¹³ They hurried and forgot His works; they did not wait for His counsel; ¹⁴ but they lusted greedily in the wilderness, and tested God in the desert. ¹⁵ And He gave them what they asked, but sent leanness into their soul. ¹⁶ And they were jealous of Moses in the camp, and Aaron the saint of Jehovah. ¹⁷ The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. ¹⁸ And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked. ¹⁹ They made a calf in Horeb, and worshiped the melted image. ²⁰ And they changed their Glory into the likeness of an ox that eats grass. ²¹ They forgot God their Deliverer, who had done great things in Egypt; ²² wonderful works in the land of Ham, fearful things by the Red Sea. ²³ And He said that He would destroy them, if Moses His chosen had not stood before Him in the breach, to turn away His wrath, so that He should not destroy them. ²⁴ And they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe His Word, ²⁵ but murmured in their tents, and did not listen to the voice of Jehovah. ²⁶ And He lifted up His hand to them, to overthrow them in the wilderness; ²⁷ to overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands. ²⁸ And they joined themselves to Baal-peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead, ²⁹ and provoked Him to anger with their doings; and the plague broke in on them.

¹⁰ And I caused them to go out from the land of Egypt, and brought them into the wilderness. ¹¹ And I gave them My statutes and showed them My judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them. ¹² And also I gave them My sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am Jehovah who sets them apart. ¹³ But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness; they did not walk in My statutes, and they despised My judgments, which if a man does, he shall even live in them. And they greatly profaned My sabbaths. And I said, I will pour out My fury on them in the wilderness to destroy them. ¹⁴ But I worked for My name's sake, so that it should not be profaned before the nations in whose sight I brought them out. ¹⁵ And also I lifted up My hand to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey; it is the glory of all lands; ¹⁶ because they despised My judgments and walked not in My sabbaths; and they profaned My sabbaths; for their heart went after their idols. ¹⁷ But My eye spared them from destroying them, nor did I make an end of them in the wilderness.

²⁵ Have you offered sacrifices and offerings to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? ²⁶ But you have carried the booth of your king and Kiyyun, your images, the star of your gods which you made for yourselves.

³⁶ He brought them out after he had worked wonders and miracles in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea and in the wilderness forty years.

³⁹ to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but thrust him away and turned back again to Egypt in their hearts, ⁴⁰ saying to Aaron, "Make us gods to go before us, for as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." ⁴¹ And they made a calf in those days and offered sacrifice to the idol and rejoiced in the work of their own hands. ⁴² Then God turned and gave them over to serve the host of the heavens, as it is written in the book of the Prophets: "O house of Israel, have you offered to Me slain beasts and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness? ⁴³ Yea, you took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, images which you made in order to worship them; and I will remove you beyond Babylon."

¹ And, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea. ² And all were baptized to Moses in the cloud and in the sea, ³ and all ate the same spiritual food, ⁴ and all drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank of the spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. ⁵ But with many of them God was not well pleased, for they were scattered in the wilderness. ⁶ And these things were our examples, that we should not be lusters after evil, as they also lusted. ⁷ Nor should we be idolaters, even as some of them, as it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." ⁸ Nor let us commit fornication, as some of them fornicated, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. ⁹ Nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted Him and were destroyed by serpents. ¹⁰ Nor murmur as some of them also murmured and were destroyed by the destroyer.

⁷ Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, "Today if you will hear His voice, ⁸ do not harden your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness, ⁹ when your fathers tempted Me, proved Me, and saw My works forty years. ¹⁰ Therefore I was grieved with that generation and said, They always err in their heart, and they have not known My ways.

¹⁶ For some, when they had heard, did provoke; however, not all who came out of Egypt by Moses. ¹⁷ But with whom was He grieved forty years? Was it not with those who had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did He swear that they should not enter into His rest, but to those who did not believe? ¹⁹ So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
